Parkland, Efron
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, undoubtedly one of the central flashpoints of the modern American experience and a singular event that has inspired as much theorizing, speculation, and conjecture as any in history. Perhaps it is a result of its insolubility that it retains such an ability to capture our imagination endlessly, whatever the reason, the books and films keep on coming. The latest in JFK-assassination-related ephemera is "Parkland," a drama that looks at the events immediately following the president's murder, through a prism of characters who were on the ground in Dallas. The large ensemble includes Zac Efron, Paul Giamatti (as Zapruder!), Billy Bob Thornton, James Badge Dale, Jacki Weaver, Colin Hanks and Marcia Gay Harden. Now the first clip and a bunch of stills have been unveiled, so start your theorizing.

Ever since "PT 109," which detailed his WWII war record and was released while he was still in office, President John F. Kennedy has been catnip to Hollywood. After all, he was good looking, charismatic, had a dark secret life of womanising, among other things, and of course, was assassinated three years into his presidency—an event that inspires debate and conspiracy theories to this day. He's been the subject of great films (Oliver Stone's "JFK") and bad ones (recent miniseries "The Kennedys"), and been played by everyone from Cliff Robertson to James Marsden (in "Lee Daniels' The Butler"). This November marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination in Dealey Plaza, and as such, it was inevitable that there'd be some kind of film to mark the occasion. We just wish it wasn't as terrible as "Parkland," which premieres (in competition, inexplicably) at the Venice Film Festival today.

“The new phrase that's floating around is you need a 'hard-bender' if you're doing a film of a certain size. A 'hard-bender' is one with either Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender and it never stops, it always astonishes me.” During our recent two-part chat with director Terry Gilliam, he described the casting hoops required to jump through in order to get a movie made; his latest, “The Zero Theorem,” stuck him with the lowest budget he's had for decades, but while he still ended up with a enigmatic cast led by Christoph Waltz, the film's original cast was even more curious choice.

When it comes the assassination of JFK, it's still one of the most sensitive wounds in America's history, with a recent study suggesting that only 24% of Americans buy the official story that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman. But another case will be made for that theory with the upcoming "Parkland," a star-studded take on the events of November 22, 1963, and director Peter Landesman is making clear his intentions. "This is a movie about the ground truth from the ground level," he told USA Today.

Despite hitting festivals last year in Berlin, Austin and St. Louis, and a star-studded cast, it has taken a while for Billy Bob Thornton's ensemble dramedy "Jayne Mansfield's Car" to make its way to theaters. But that may also be because studios just aren't in the business of ensemble dramedies so much any more. But the writer/director/actor's fourth feature is now on the way and it has been given a new trailer to get the word out.

While he might be name-checked as often as someone like John Goodman, Billy Bob Thornton is certainly in the realm of Coen Brothers players. He bagged roles in "The Man Who Wasn't There" and "Intolerable Cruelty," and also starred in the Coen-produced "Bad Santa" but it has been a decade since they've worked together. But now they're aligning on a project that's certain to raise a few eyebrows.

While she hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2012's movie-you-already-forgot-about "Safe House," Vera Farmiga has a helluva 2013 lined up. This spring sees her raise a pyscho in the A&E series "Bates Motel," while this summer she'll continue to chill in the horror flick "The Conjuring." And just as those two projects head to screens big and small, the actress is eager to get back on set.

It’s no secret that Tom Hanks as a producer is fond of looking at the past, whether through the prism of the space race, in “From The Earth To The Moon,” or through war -- specifically World War II -- as in companion pieces “Band Of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Now, Hanks will set his sights on one of the most traumatic events in American history, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, with “Parkland,” which has cast its leads.

In the last decade, Billy Bob Thornton has become associated with a litany of cantankerous, intimidating characters, via “Mr. Woodcock,” “Bad News Bears,” and of course, “Bad Santa.” Almost ten years after making “Bad Santa,” Thornton is planning to return to the role that made him a king of black comedy via a sequel to be penned by one of the two competing sets of writers. Given the positive experience Thornton had on the first film, he recently said that he hopes lightning will strike twice as he enters into the first sequel of his career.
