Blood Ties, cast
Granted, "Blood Ties" is a bit of mess (and you can read why in our review from Cannes), but there is much to like about it too. Particularly the performances, with Clive Owen giving the best turn he's delivered in a quite a while, matched by Billy Crudup as his emotionally wounded brother and James Caan as their father who comes between the pair, eager to keep the family together. A sprawling two-and-a-half-hour saga set in the mid-1970s, the story chronicles ex-con Chris, recently out of another stint in the joint, who spirals back into a life of crime, while is brother Frank is torn between the affection he has for his brother and his duty to bring him to justice.

Cannes Review: Sprawling, Uneven Crime Saga 'Blood Ties' Falls Short Of Epic Scope

If there is any movie this year at Cannes that is absolutely brimming with promise on paper, it's Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties." With an extended cast featuring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, James Caan, Marion Cotillard, Noah Emmerich and Lili Taylor among others along with a script co-written by James Gray, one wonders how it could go wrong. And while "Blood Ties" isn't a disaster, it's certainly a mess, a sprawling crime saga that endeavours to evoke the great character-driven movies of the 1970s, but never quite lives up to its epic scope.

Cannes you feel it? (Ha ha, groan). We're less than two weeks from red carpets being rolled out on the Croisette and with the lineup now firmed, all we can do is wait for the movies to arrive. And until that moment when the lights dim and the reels or digital bits unspool, these new images from Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" will hold it down.

Having worked with folks like Steven Spielberg, the Coen Brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Mamet, Gus Van Sant and more, William H. Macy has no shortage of experience to draw on as he makes his feature directorial debut. But first, he'll need to get a cast together and he's done just that.

We have to admit, this is one of those projects we'd been hearing about for a while, and being an indie production, it's always hard to tell when these things will actually get off the ground. But when you have a guy like super producer Scott Rudin throwing his weight around, things get done, and moreover, big names can come into play. During the spring, Mark Ruffalo confirmed with us that he was taking a hard look at "Red Light Winter," and now an actress who has been riding an incredible wave of buzz all year confirms that he is aboard and that she is coming along as well.

Billy Crudup's always had a slightly uneasy relationship with celebrity. The stage star grabbed many with his film debut in Barry Levinson's "Sleepers," but ever since, he hasn't shown much desire to really jump on the A-list; every time he takes on a star-making turn like "Almost Famous," he returns to the stage, or makes a tiny little-seen indie, with his blockbuster performances tending towards supporting roles in the likes of "Mission: Impossible III" or "Public Enemies."
