So here's some interesting news of the day: Bob Balaban is producing a remake of the musical "South Pacific." It's a bit surprising considering his credits as a producer thus far have been few, with "Gosford Park" the most notable, but yeah, he's hoping to give the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical a contemporary big screen redo. And he's found someone to possibly be his new Mitzi Gaynor.

With the one-two punch of the animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and last year’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” Wes Anderson has reinvigorated his career and is already hard at work on his next film, “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” While little is known about the film, other than it being another period piece, slowly but surely he has revealed the grand ensemble he’s assembled which now will include character actor and ‘Moonrise’ narrator Bob Balaban.

After a busy few years (six movies in three years, from "Up in the Air" to "The Descendants"), George Clooney's been taking things a little easier in 2012. That's not to say that he hasn't been busy: the actor wrapped Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," and is a producer on Ben Affleck's "Argo," a role which is all but certain to see him pick up an Oscar nomination in a record-breaking sixth different category (having previously got nods in Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay). But with the former being delayed from its original berth in November to an unknown date next year, 2012 marks the first calendar year since Clooney's ascension to stardom in the early 90s that the actor hasn't appeared in a film in theaters.

Having received some of his best reviews in years, Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" made a grand debut opening the Cannes Film Festival in style last week. By all accounts (including one very positive review of our own), Anderson's latest picture and first live-action film in five years, is a pleasant, charming and enchanting return to form that's both nostalgic for those early pre-teen years and emotional in its exploration of adolescent angst and early love. Starring newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward with an excellent supporting cast featuring Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman, Playlist contributor Aaron Hillis got a chance to sit down with some of the cast at the press conference in Cannes.

There is something about being back in the distinct world of a filmmaker that can be both comforting and exciting. And while Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" marks his first period picture and first live action movie since 2007's "The Darjeeling Limited" everything we've seen thus points to the tone and aesthetic we've always admired from the filmmaker.

The Stephen Frears-directed “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight” has had no shortage of casting updates since things got underway back in February, with future “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” star Benjamin Walker joining the fold as Kevin Kennedy, a Supreme Court clerk who supported Ali and even wrote briefs that would help to maintain the boxer's status as a conscientious objector of the war, all in this tale of Ali’s trial following his arrest for anti-Vietnam sentiments and behaviour when drafted to serve in the war.
