Misery loves company and in the case of "Silver Linings Playbook," the new Weinstein Company comedy, dysfunctional fuck-ups seem to travel in packs as well. Directed by David O. Russell ("The Fighter") and an adaptation of Matthew Quick's novel of the same name, "Silver Linings Playbook" centers on a former teacher who moves back in with his parents after a stint in a mental institution. Things get more challenging when the teacher, Pat (Bradley Cooper), meets a mysterious girl (Jennifer Lawrence) with deep-rooted problems of her own that may be even more messed up than his own. Their mutual issues seem to be the myriad depression medication they've both been on which you can see in this new clip.

David O. Russell has come a long way. "I Heart Huckabees" wasn't much of a hit in 2004, and its difficult production (culminating in a notorious viral video with Lily Tomlin) went widely public. His following picture, "Nailed," still remains on a shelf (it was abandoned when financial problems shut the film down before it was complete), and the filmmaker struggled to mount several projects, but none came to fruition. This all changed in 2010 with "The Fighter," which scored seven Oscar nominations in 2011 including Best Picture and Best Director.

“I'm interested in telling stories about families,” Derek Cianfrance, the director of “The Place Beyond The Pines,” said this week during the Toronto International Film Festival, where his hotly anticipated drama finally premiered to much acclaim. Cianfrance stormed Sundance in 1998 with “Brother Tied,” a picture that was critically acclaimed at the festival, but then vanished afterwards. It wasn’t until twelve years later that he returned with his sophomore feature effort, “Blue Valentine,” a searing family drama about a marriage in irreparable decay, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, which put him squarely back on the map.

After the overwhelming success of "The Fighter," it looked the bromance between David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg that began with "Three Kings" and was followed up with "I Heart Huckabees" was as strong as ever, with the two immediately planning to reunite for an adaptation of "The Silver Linings Playbook."

Box office trends exist for a reason, and this weekend only cements that September by and large sucks, box office-wise – this weekend saw the worst results in several years, with no movie cracking the $10 million mark and the whole top ten taking only $46 million in total, a 22% drop from the equivalent frame last year. It's not like studios can help it: the product just isn't very appealing for the general audience (although one wonders if "Gangster Squad" might have picked things up – the film was originally set to open this weekend before Aurora-mandated reshoots put it back to January). The profits aren't entirely too thrilling for Lionsgate, but they have effectively ruled a flimsy roost for four weeks straight with "The Possession" taking the top spot for the second weekend in a row with $9.5 million following two weeks of "The Expendables 2" dominance. We use the term "dominance" loosely.

Life hasn't been too kind lately for Pat Solitano. He's just been released from a court ordered stint in a mental hospital after severly beating the man he caught cheating with his wife. Diagnosed as bipolar with mood swings, Pat has a difficult journey ahead of him but he's optimistic. With a rallying cry of "Excelsior," he believes that you can take "all negativity and make it a silver lining." His outlook is positive and he hopes to rebuild himself to win his wife back who has a restraining order out on him. And so begins David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," an enormously entertaining, crowd-pleasing winner from the director whose comedic edge has never been sharper.

Of all the films arriving at TIFF this year, few are premiering under such an air of mystery as Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." With only a couple of official images, but no posters or trailers, the tone and scope of the movie remained under wraps. Following "Blue Valentine," would the film be a similarly intimate and narrowly focused story or something completely different? The answer is that "The Place Beyond The Pines" is an ambitious epic that is cut from some of the same thematic tissue as Cianfrance's previous film, but expands the scope into a wondrously widescreen tale of fathers, sons and the legacy of sins that are passed down through the generations.

Harvey Weinstein has three big Oscar heavyweights debuting across the next few months, all of which he has high hopes for. We've now seen Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master," which hits theaters from next week, and it certainly seems to have the right stuff. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" only wrapped about a month ago, and as such, we'd be very surprised if the film was ready to be seen all that much earlier than its December 25th release date. And in between is David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," an offbeat romantic-comedy-drama that stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker.

So which David O. Russell will appear for "The Silver Linings Playbook"? The movie, about an institutionalized man (played by Bradley Cooper) who returns to his parents (Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro) and falls in love with a similarly unwell woman (Jennifer Lawrence), also marks first time anybody's seen Chris Tucker since "Rush Hour 3" (in a dialed down performance) and it's hard to gauge thus far where it will land tonally. Will it be something a bit more screwball like "Flirting With Disaster" or "I Heart Huckabees," or a deft blend of comedy and drama like "The Fighter"?
