After “Blue Valentine” tackled the issues of marriage and gender relations, it seemed like a natural progression that filmmaker Derek Cianfrance decided to take on parenthood and legacy in his next film. Taking six years to make, "The Place Beyond The Pines” deals with the issue of legacy in America. Set in working class Schenectady, New York, it tells the story of families on both sides of the law and deals with what fathers intentionally and unintentionally leave their sons (inspiring our list of 22 Great Father & Son Movies). A hit at this year’s TIFF (read our review here), the film stars Ryan Gosling as a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to bank robbery to provide for his young son, and Bradley Cooper as a police officer caught in the crosshairs, a role the actor nearly gave up on. The stellar cast also includes Eva Mendes, Dane DeHaan, Ray Liotta, Emory Cohen, Ben Mendelsohn and Rose Byrne.

Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Only a few weeks back, things were looking grim for the much-buzzed-about western "Jane Got a Gun." The film, starring and produced by Natalie Portman, had a Black List-ed script and a top-notch cast, but a few weeks after Michael Fassbender left the project, director Lynne Ramsay bailed just as production was meant to get underway, with actor Jude Law, who was to play the villain, following hot on her heels.

“I’m full of epic stories,” the loquacious Derek Cianfrance told Vanity Fair recently. And it’s true. We sat down with the director and co-writer behind “The Place Beyond The Pines,” and Cianfrance was indeed, full of amazing stories. He told us in the part of our interview we ran yesterday that that he had to pare down a 158 page script to 120 pages to earn his financing. So, did the filmmaker do a rewrite? Nope. He increased the margins as far as they would go and then selected the smallest font possible and got down to 120 pages. The financiers didn’t notice and he got his green light. Crafty, right?

Of all the films that premiered at TIFF last year, few arrived under such an air of mystery as Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines." With only a couple of official images, but no posters or trailers, the tone and scope of the movie remained under wraps prior to its screening. Following "Blue Valentine," would the film be a similarly intimate and narrowly focused story or something completely different? The answer is that "The Place Beyond The Pines" is an ambitious epic that is cut from some of the same thematic tissue as Cianfrance's previous film, but expands the scope into a wondrously widescreen tale of fathers, sons and the legacy of sins that are passed down through the generations.

These days, Ryan Gosling is coming to define “Indiewood”. His brand of subtle gestures and billboard bankability is rapidly making him an icon of the not-quite-mainstream (we’ll let his Mouseketeer days slide), while the indie-convert Bradley Cooper is similarly redefining himself in the wake of “Silver Linings Playbook.”

He's a traveling stunt rider with no fixed address. She's the woman he sees once or twice a year when he rolls through town. Then there's the small town cop, who's overqualified for the job. Their worlds will collide - - and that's basically all you need to know about Derek Cianfrance's "The Place Beyond The Pines."

" 'The Hangover Part III' is Alan's story," director Todd Phillips said late last year about the plot of the third installment of the 'Hangover' franchise. "He's going through a crisis after the death of his father, [and] the Wolf Pack is all he has." And after surviving Las Vegas and Thailand together, who better to have your back? Well the new trailer for the "fitting end to this three-part opera of mayhem and bad decisions" has arrived to strap in.

The sound you hear is that of motorcycle revving, and the aroma is the exhaust that will spread over generations... Yes, we're being a bit poetic about "The Place Beyond The Pines," director Derek Cianfrance's epic forthcoming film, and we kind of have to be because to talk too much about the movie is to ruin its dramatic heft. However, the movie still needs to be marketed and this week kicks off with a new clip and some behind-the-scenes images from the movie.

While he didn't walk away with an Oscar on Sunday night, Bradley Cooper isn't lacking in forward momentum. Next month he starts shooting his next collaboration with David O. Russell, the untitled Abscam movie (which could be in the Best Picture race next year), and by the end of May he'll have two more movies in theaters: Derek Cianfrance's searing "The Place Beyond The Pines" and trilogy capper "The Hangover Part III." And he's been lining up project after project (which we'll get to in a moment) with one more tossed on the pile.
