First Official Look: Bruce Dern & Will Forte In Alexander Payne's 'Nebraska''

There’s been some confusion about the look of Alexander Payne’s upcoming drama, “Nebraska” which will be in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month (fyi, if you’re headed to France, it’s playing late in the schedule.) Original reports had it pegged as shot in black and white and subsequent pieces said black and white wouldn’t be cost effective and Paramount, who was financing, forced Payne to shoot in color.

As part of our steady quest to go cold turkey from the Oscar season over the next few days, we've been running down some of our possibilities for the films that will be elbowing each other for awards in 2014. It was only a couple of months ago that we saw the first (english-subtitled) trailer for the new Studio Ghibli film, “From Up On Poppy Hill.” The film is written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son, Goro Miyazaki (“Tales From Earthsea”) and the voice cast for the English-language dub has been revealed.

Well, that was seemingly easy enough. After toying with the idea of Gene Hackman, Robert Forster, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duvall and Bryan Cranston for the lead of his upcoming film "Nebraska"-- along with Casey Affleck and Paul Rudd for the supporting role in a father/son road trip tale -- director Alexander Payne, finally settled on the unlikely pair of Bruce Dern and "MacGruber" star Will Forte.

Fresh off the Oscar-nominated success of "The Descendants," Alexander Payne is currently en route to Cannes, where he'll serve on the competition jury alongside the likes of Andrea Arnold, Diane Kruger, Ewan McGregor, Jean-Paul Gaultier and chairman Nanni Moretti. But it looks like our favorite David Strathairn impersonator made a big decision before he got on the plane to the South of France: as he's apparently decided on who he'd like to star in his next film.

After the recent unveiling of posters for Francis Ford Coppola's "Twixt" that seem more indicative of the film's dark, gothic tones, a handful of new images have been released, including the first glimpse at Coppola family favorite Alden Ehrenreich and vet Bruce Dern in the film along with star Val Kilmer.
