Long hours on the road, sleeping on sofas, eating very little, playing shows for little money; it's a wonder why anyone struggles to make it as a musician. But for Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) there really isn't any other option to playing music. "...And what, just exist?" he counters, when his sister suggests he stops couch surfing, borrowing money and barely getting by, and re-enter the Merchant Marine. While Llewyn can't quite put into words the passion that sustains an existence perpetually on the fringes, hustling for the next dollar, it's that weary energy that drives the Coen brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Inside Llewyn Davis
Once the quietly bold, somewhat naïve teenage characters of “An Education” and “Never Let Me Go,” actress Carey Mulligan has swiftly altered course in the past few years and tapped into an inner rage—first as Michael Fassbender’s unsettled sister in Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” and now as the perpetually furious folk singer Jean in the Coen Brothers’ newest film, “Inside Llewyn Davis” (our review here). Her character has good reason (mild spoilers): facing the struggles of starting a music career in 1960s New York alongside a volatile affair with Llewyn (played by Oscar Isaac), Mulligan’s character is a cathartic, energetic flood of anger over Llewyn’s aimless nature, and a unique touch to the brilliant film that falls in line among the directors’ best.

The year 2013 may have flew by fast, but not if you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers. The first trailer for “Inside Llewyn Davis” dropped this past January, then the film had its first private screening the following month, and then made its festival premiere at Cannes in May. Since then, unless you’ve been lucky enough to see it during its festival run, you have had to wait throughout the entire calendar year to catch a glimpse of this film. Thankfully, a whole boatload of promotional materials have just been dropped so you can keep yourself occupied until the film finally lands at a theater near you.

After landing on cinephile radars with 1998's "The Celebration," Thomas Vinterberg went on a weird and wild cinematic journey. From pictures that didn't or barely got a release stateside, to disappointments like "Dear Wendy" or "It's All About Love," Vinterberg failed to match the acclaim of his Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize-winning film. That's until this year's "The Hunt," the gripping tale of community persecution that earned rave reviews, and more Cannes awards (an Ecumenical Jury Prize for Vinterberg, a Best Actor trophy for Mads Mikkelsen). And the helmer isn't wasting a moment riding that momentum.

Do you really need this much more convincing to see the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis"? If you haven't already been swayed by the rave reviews (including ours), the stirring theme song "Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song)" (listen here), or the numerous trailers that have already captured the humorous melancholy of the movie, well, here's one more piece of advertising that will hopefully put it over the top for you.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Here's a bit of a warning before you watch this latest trailer for the Coen Brothers' marvelous "Inside Llewyn Davis"—it's not exactly spoiler heavy, but there are some revelations that are best experienced completely cold. That being said, if you just can't resist, the movie certainly won't be ruined for you, and this latest spot does a solid job at capturing the irresistible blend of drama and morose humour the sibling directors have perfected over their career.

There are few faster rising UK writers at the moment than Abi Morgan. Under her impressive belt already is Steve McQueen’s “Shame," the Meryl Streep starring biopic “The Iron Lady,” the already missed Brit series “The Hour” and the movie which arguably kicked it all off for her career, “Brick Lane.” And her career continues to grow in leaps and bounds with her latest getting a pretty top shelf actress to lead the project.

The Coen brothers have taken audiences to a variety of unique and distinct cinematic worlds, from the corporate boardroom of a toymaker in "The Hudsucker Proxy"; the vast hinterlands of North Dakota in "Fargo"; the hijinks at a fitness center in "Burn After Reading"; the seamy surreal underbelly of Hollywood in "Barton Fink"; the weirder corners of California in "The Big Lebowski" and so much more. And their next destination? The clubs of the '60s folk music scene in "Inside Llewyn Davis," their knockout Cannes film and early contender for one of the best movies hands down of the year.
