Blue Jasmine
Well, it's been twelve months, so it's time for another Woody Allen film. This time around it's "Blue Jasmine," and no, he's not in exotic Barcelona, stuffy London or the touristy Rome. Instead, he's in San Francisco for the first time, and the results look pretty great.

It's been six years since "Velvet Goldmine" and "Far From Heaven" helmer Todd Haynes last had a film in theaters -- the uneven, but intermittently transcendent Bob Dylan picture "I'm Not There." Haynes has been busy in the meantime, helming the awesome, Emmy-laden miniseries "Mildred Pierce," as well as an episode of "Enlightened," but we've missed him on the big screen, and so we're excited by Screen Daily's news that Haynes will direct a new film called "Carol."

Incoming casting news, fresh from the French Riviera: first off, Philip Seymour Hoffman has signed on for a new film, so we can all get our regular dose of rumpled magnificence. “God's Pocket” will be directed by John Slattery, who you know as “Mad Men”'s silver fox Roger Sterling but who is making the move to directing (having helmed several excellent episodes of the series in which he stars), adapting a Pete Dexter novel about Mickey (Hoffman), whose attempts to move on after the suspicious, and not unwelcome, death of his unstable stepson are frustrated by a local reporter with a hunch.

The plots for Woody Allen movies tend to be state secrets as long as possible before the film is released, and as such, his upcoming "Blue Jasmine" is still a bit of a mystery. But one thing we do know: Cate Blanchett doesn't seem to happy (or her character anyway).

With Cate Blanchett currently shooting George Clooney's "Monuments Men," and waiting to see who she'll match wits with in "Cinderella" now that Emma Watson is no longer in contention, the actress is being one more project in the cooker. And this time it's for something on cable.

Forget J.J. Abrams, forget Christopher Nolan...no one knows secrecy like Woody Allen. The prolific filmmaker continues his one-movie-per-year work schedule this summer with the release of "Blue Jasmine," and what do we know about it? Nothing really except that it finds the filmmaker back on American soil after spending most of the last few years gallivanting around Europe. But a new image is here, so you can decipher all the clues you want.

There was a time when Kenneth Branagh was best known for his Shakespeare adaptations, but he's always had a tentpole heart it seems. Going all the way back to 1994's "Frankenstein," which seemed like an anomaly at the time, he's shown a knack for big screen spectacle, and after helming "Thor" he took the gig directing "Jack Ryan." Unlikely? Maybe, but once again, Branagh is ready to play with a lot of money and special effects.

As day follows night, 2013 will bring another Woody Allen-directed film with an all-star cast. And barely a week into the new year, word is firming up on the director's latest. We knew already that the film, the first by the filmmaker to be mostly set in San Francisco, stars Cate Blanchett alongside Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins and Peter Sarsgaard, and involves a woman facing financial ruin, who comes across a man who may be able to stay solvent.

After a busy few years (six movies in three years, from "Up in the Air" to "The Descendants"), George Clooney's been taking things a little easier in 2012. That's not to say that he hasn't been busy: the actor wrapped Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," and is a producer on Ben Affleck's "Argo," a role which is all but certain to see him pick up an Oscar nomination in a record-breaking sixth different category (having previously got nods in Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay). But with the former being delayed from its original berth in November to an unknown date next year, 2012 marks the first calendar year since Clooney's ascension to stardom in the early 90s that the actor hasn't appeared in a film in theaters.
