If you're wondering what that tingling sensation you just felt might be, it's the Oscar campaign for "Foxcatcher" ramping up, and right at the center is a transformative performance by Steve Carell. He plays oddball millionaire John du Pont, whose desire to train the next gold medal winning Olympic wrestling team meets with tragedy. And it was a role in a film based on a true story that found the actor visiting a dark side previously unknown to the general public.

Foxcatcher
"Director Bennett Miller...has outdone himself, turning his uniquely meticulous eye to a tiny story in a totally rarefied, specific environment and through whatever alchemy he has perfected, created something so universal and resonant that it feels epic, sprawling, almost ancient in its mythic overtones. 'Foxcatcher' is an enormous film," Jessica Kiang wrote in the opening paragraph of her review from the Cannes Film Festival. To say that she loved the film would be an understatement, and certainly the rest of us here are eagerly anticipating the film, that is undoubtedly going to be in the Oscar conversation this fall.

By almost every account out of the Cannes Film Festival, Channing Tatum delivers one of his finest performances yet in Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher," a wrestling drama that left more than its fair share of scars on the actor. Talking with Vulture this spring about a sequence in which he breaks a mirror, Tatum recalls pushing himself to the point where he didn't realize the physical strength he was putting into it. "I went through the wall on the other side," he said. "You get jacked up and you don't really think, Oh, I'm just gonna hit it hard enough to break the mirror. I missed a stud by about four inches. The cut on my head, that was real."

Hail Caesar Cast, Coen Brothers
So maybe let's start this with a hat tip to Channing Tatum and how far he's come. From that guy in the "Step Up" movie, the actor made steady moves to work with directors of note, taking roles in films by Kimberly Peirce ("Stop-Loss"), Michael Mann ("Public Enemies"), Ron Howard ("The Dilemma"), Kevin Macdonald ("The Eagle"), Steven Soderbergh ("Haywire," "Side Effects," "Magic Mike") and Bennett Miller ("Foxcatcher") and that's not to mention becoming the star of franchises like "G.I. Joe" and "21 Jump Street." And so, don't be surprised that the Coens have tapped the actor for their next film.

22 Jump Street
Comedy sequel "22 Jump Street" lands on Friday, and as you'll know from our review, it's maybe the best movie of the summer so far, and certainly the funniest. But if you're someone who really hates jokes and laughing, there's some good news for you, because when the film hits DVD & Blu-ray at the end of the year, there'll be an alternate cut of the film without any gags in it.

Channing Tatum, Gambit
With the studio superhero game plan these days to take characters and expand them outward in growing universes, the idea that they'll take risks with standalone properties that don't tie into the main, money-churning narrative seems slim. After all, that was the initial idea with "Ant-Man," and look how that turned out. Nevertheless, Channing Tatum—newly anointed as Gambit—is hoping he'll get a chance to shine solo before joining the rest of the X-Men clan over at Fox.

22 Jump Street
Phil Lord and Chris Miller have built a career out of making things work that really should not have worked. Coming off only the short-lived cult animated series "Clone High," and a brief year on "How I Met Your Mother," the duo made their feature debut with "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs," an adaptation of a 34-page children's picture book that looked pretty poor on paper, and turned out to be something of a treat for people of any age. Then, they took on a reboot of '80s cop show "21 Jump Street," starring the much-mocked Channing Tatum, and turned it into a fresh and funny spin on both the high school and the buddy cop movie. And only a few months ago, they turned something called "The Lego Movie" into one of the best films of the year so far.

22 Jump Street
This year's spring/summer comedies either seem to be hitting or missing. Earlier this month, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron scored big with "Neighbors," while this weekend's "A Million Ways To Die In The West" looks like a colossal disaster that commits the one cardinal sin of comedies that don't work: it's not funny. But don't worry, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are on their way.
