"Side Effects," a twisty-turny psychodrama and thriller, will occupy a special place in the Steven Soderbergh oeuvre. Since his highly influential debut "sex, lies, and videotape" single-handedly launched the American independent film revival, his body of work has included 26 films that have covered an absurd amount of topical ground, nevermind all the genres he's dipped into. If all goes according to plan, "Side Effects," will be the last Steven Soderbergh movie ever released theatrically. In some ways this puts an almost unfair amount of pressure on the complex little thriller, especially considering that the film may be better suited for premium cable than his upcoming HBO Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra." The picture's conspiratorial late-night tone and fleshy after hours luridness was practically built for watching at night, when our parents think we've gone off to bed (think '80s films directed by folks like Adrian Lyne). Like much of his recent output, "Side Effects" is a somewhat slight genre exercise, but given that it's Soderbergh, it's stylistically unparalleled, totally gripping and occasionally devastating in its emotional presentation thanks to its two leads Rooney Mara and Jude Law.

Thus far, 2013 has been a major drag for new movies, with January once again proving to be the drop-off zone for movies that studios regret making. But thankfully, February is less than a week away and the cinematic horizon looks a bit brighter. One movie many are already talking about is Steven Soderbergh's penultimate picture, "Side Effects."

If there's one thing that's beginning to buzz around Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects," it's that you pretty much want to go in as fresh as possible. The movie has started screening in advance of its release next month, and the general feeling is that the trailers give too much away. If you want the best experience possible, you'll want to settle in to this film without knowing anything. But we're pretty sure this clip should be okay to watch.

So far, the 2013 movie season has been pretty dreadful. Aside from Oscar-nominated pictures going into wider release, there hasn't been much to choose from at the multiplex, but relief is around the corner. Steven Soderbergh continues the run into his hiatus with one of two movies he'll be dropping this year, the thriller "Side Effects." A brand new U.K. trailer featuring lots of new footage has arrived to serve up a fresh look at the film.

Some potential *spoilers* may abound within this post, fyi. Let's revisit the spring of 2012. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" isn't testing well, and Channing Tatum, who's had two films surpass the $100 million mark domestically ("The Vow," "21 Jump Street") is quickly becoming a star. It's also just one month before "Magic Mike," a starring vehicle for Tatum, will be released and go on to cross the same $100 million threshold and become one of the most profitable movies of the year thanks to an inexpensive budget.  Everyone can feel there will be magic in 'Mike.' Hollywood can taste it. Paramount and 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation" producers come to the brilliant realization, "Hey! We've got Channing Tatum in our movie!"

Last year, when the time came to pick our man of the year, we had a tough choice. Ryan Gosling, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and George Clooney all had excellent, diverse and busy 2011s, and after hours of furious debate, we ended up settling on Michael Fassbender. This year, the choice seemed to us a simple one, albeit shared between two actors who both turned around their image and perception with a string of roles across the last year, culminating in a film that teamed them up to great effect. Yes, it's Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum.

The first two months of the New Year are usually viewed as a dumping ground, but in recent years critical and box office success stories like "Shutter Island" and "Safe House" have shown that it's a quiet frame where genre fare can do tremendously well. That's why we're not worried an iota about Steven Soderbergh's forthcoming "Side Effects," which got the ball rolling a few weeks ago with a pretty fantastic first trailer. And while things are on the down low for the moment, a few more stills from the movie have popped up.

After getting his ass handed to him by Gina Carano in "Haywire," being buds with Jonah Hill in "21 Jump Street" and shaking his money maker in "Magic Mike" in 2012, next year Channing Tatum is coming to save America. "White House Down" will find the President in danger, but only one man can save him...

We're coming near to the end... Steven Soderbergh's cinematic hiatus is imminent, but he's looking to go out with a bang. This summer's "Magic Mike" was not only a big hit, but managed to make a story about male strippers a throwback to character-driven movies of the '70s. And now we have the first trailer for his penultimate film, and third team up with Channing Tatum: "Side Effects." And, yes, it looks great.

An American thriller film by Roland Emmerich, the guy who directed super-sized blockbusters like "Independence Day, " "Godzilla" and "2012" and starring Channing Tatum, "White House Down" might just be the movie of summer 2013 if you're into loud spectacle. Tatum, who has arguably had the best 2012 of any male contemporary thanks to three over-$100 million dollar grossers ("The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike") stars as a United States Secret Service agent who must rescue the President of the United States (Jamie Foxx) from a paramilitary group that has taken over the White House. Let's guess, he's new and unexperienced (first day on the job?), but somehow he "Die Hard"s it and against all odds and saves the day.
