Three Hearts
Benoît Jacquot is a festival veteran, last doing the rounds with 2012's costume drama "Farewell, My Queen." Now he's back with a more contemporary tale, riffing on an old theme, while rounding some exciting talent to tell his story. The Bastards, Claire Denis
For all of director Claire Denis' traditional fragmented narratives and elliptical editing techniques, her Cannes entry this year, “Bastards,” has unsettled audiences even further, causing a fest reaction that we wrote “not so much divided as cleaved” down the middle. Fashioning a tale of abuse, revenge, and guilt into a bizarre mixture of moods and influences, the film will finally make its way to U.S. theatres next month, and we've got a crop of five new clips to help us get a sense of Denis' latest rhythms.

Making her feature directorial debut "Augustine," Alice Wintour wisely enlisted the talents of Vincent Lindon and Chiara Mastroianni, two excellent veterean French actors, to take on supporting roles in the film. But in the lead, she went with a rising newcomer, singer/actress Soko and added to that the challenge of making a period based film. The results? Two César award nominations for her efforts for Best First Film and Best Costume Design. And now, the picture is headed stateside.

Claire Denis’ last two features, “35 Shots of Rum” and “White Material” were both critically adored and ended up on a lot of Best Of lists when they debuted between 2008 and 2009. Her back catalogue is equally impressive, so it’s no wonder then that her follow-up that we’ve been waiting four years for is highly anticipated.

When the members of The Playlist like to get our foreign film art house mojo working, there are few filmmakers as consistently rewarding as Claire Denis. As we outlined in our retrospective a couple years back, her body of work is impressive, with a number of distinct, individual films that are unlike anything anyone else is doing. And moreover, she's directed some of our favorite films -- arthouse or otherwise -- of the past few years with 2008's "35 Shots Of Rum" and 2009's "White Material." But she's since gone very quiet, but we're happy that a new film is on the horizon.
