12 Years A Slave
Coming off an outstanding performance in “12 Years A Slave,” one that earned him an Academy Award nomination, there will be no shortage of work for actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. He’s already met with J.J. Abrams, possibly about “Star Wars: Episode VII,” (though potentially about any number of Bad Robot projects) and now he’s being tipped as the main villain in the next James Bond movie.

He may not have taken home an Oscar on Sunday night, but hopefully his performance in "12 Years A Slave" made it clear that any time Chiwetel Ejiofor is on the screen, he's a must watch presence. And coming this spring is another movie which will give folks a chance to check out his range.

Underrated Performances, 2014 Actor & Actress Nominees
The trouble with awards season, especially when it comes to actors who often attract nominations, is that there's a risk that it delegitimizes their work if it doesn't get recognized. If Meryl Streep, say, has countless nominations, than there could be a temptation to think of her performances in less awards-friendly fare as "lesser" work, whereas in fact, the opposite can be true—even in films that are of otherwise questionable quality, the actors can still give remarkable performances.

Gravity 12 Years A Slave
For a minute, it looked as if the race might be over. David O. Russell's "American Hustle" (and the way that that phrase rhymes alone makes us glad it's a Best Picture nominee) had the momentum going into the Oscar nominations last week, and had even more after it: ten nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and four acting nods, one in each category, only the second movie to achieve that feat in the last thirty years (Russell's previous film, "Silver Linings Playbook," being the other).

It's been brewing for a while, but John Hillcoat's cop thriller "Triple Nine" is slowly but surely putting together a helluva cast. Over the summer, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Charlie Hunnam all got involved, and while one has been lost since, more exciting choices have come aboard.

Making A Scene Cate Blanchett
When Janusz Kaminski isn’t lensing his often Oscar-nominated work on a batch of Steven Spielberg’s finest films, including “Schindler’s List," “Saving Private Ryan," and most recently “Lincoln," the cinematographer also occasionally settles into the director’s chair. Three films (including the underwhelming Winona Ryder horror “Lost Souls”) and a TV episode of “The Event” have allowed Kaminski full cinematic reign so far, and just as Canon performed with their own short film campaign this month that found actors at the helm, the NY Times have created their own — and allowed Kaminski 11 unique vignettes within which to work.

J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan may be pouring enormous effort into retooling writer Michael Arndt's original draft of “Star Wars: Episode VII," but after Disney's refusal of producer Kathleen Kennedy's request to consequently delay production, Abrams and co. are forced to also push right ahead with locking a cast to deliver it. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher have already been involved in negotiations to return, but more curious are the new faces to the “Star Wars” universe, and the latest one rumored is an exciting prospect triggered by an uncertain sighting.

12 Years A Slave
... and here we go. Even though we're not even in November, and with two more months of movies and awards season contenders to come, the Gotham Independent Film Awards have announced their nominees for 2013. While this may be "the first major awards ceremony of the film season," the real accomplishment here is shining a light on the kind of well-made, acclaimed movies that will unfortunately be forgotten as the heavier hitters with more money behind them elbow their way to the Dolby Theater in February.

12 Years A Slave
Of this year’s many awards contenders, Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave” (our review) is the one—unfairly or not—many prognosticators have hotly tipped to take it all at the Kodak Theater next year. With the film already out in New York and L.A. with more cities to follow, Fox Searchlight has released two more clips from the film alongside a featurette focusing on McQueen himself.
