12 Years A Slave
... and here we go. Even though we're not even in November, and with two more months of movies and awards season contenders to come, the Gotham Independent Film Awards have announced their nominees for 2013. While this may be "the first major awards ceremony of the film season," the real accomplishment here is shining a light on the kind of well-made, acclaimed movies that will unfortunately be forgotten as the heavier hitters with more money behind them elbow their way to the Dolby Theater in February.

12 Years A Slave
Of this year’s many awards contenders, Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave” (our review) is the one—unfairly or not—many prognosticators have hotly tipped to take it all at the Kodak Theater next year. With the film already out in New York and L.A. with more cities to follow, Fox Searchlight has released two more clips from the film alongside a featurette focusing on McQueen himself.

12 Years A Slave
We'd wager that trying to find any kind of merchandise possibilities for a movie called "12 Years A Slave" isn't easy, but we have to admit that an "inspired by" soundtrack isn't the first thing that would come to our mind. And yet, here we are, with full details on the disc that's coming for Steve McQueen's tough, brutal drama.

12 Years A Slave
Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave” instantly establishes itself as the most unflinching of all slave dramas, which is to say, there is plenty of flinching, not to mention cowering and recoiling and passing out, thanks to beatings and whippings that arrive at roughly 10-to-15-minute intervals throughout a 133-minute running time. “Amistad,” meet the Marquis de Sade, in the form of slavemaster Michael Fassbender, who puts his victims through more tortures than Mel Gibson ever could have imagined for Jesus.

12 Years A Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave" is one of the most buzzed about films this year. Based on the true story of Solomon Northup and helmed by the director behind "Hunger" and "Shame," the film follows an African American free man who in 1841 was kidnapped and forced into slavery. There's been a lot of talk already about the film being a shoe-in for a few Academy Awards. Our own critic-on-the-ground at Telluride Chris Wellman wrote, "....it quickly became apparent that leading man Chiwetel Ejiofor had moved to the head of the line of best actor candidates, with [Michael] Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o sure to contend in the supporting categories. Even those of us who aren’t Oscar bloggers should break out whatever mnemonic devices we need to immediately commit Ejiofor’s and Nyong'o’s names to the tips of our tongues."

As ever, all the Oscar categories look competitive even from this far out, but nothing is going to be a tougher fight this year than the Best Actor race. It's typically a harder slog than most categories -- ask John Hawkes, who missed the cut last year for "The Sessions," despite months of buzz and predictions -- but this year looks like something else entirely. It's still only October, with many of the major possibilities still to open, and a few still to be unveiled completely, and the line-up is stacked.

12 Years A Slave, Steve McQueen
Winner of the Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award and one of the critical darlings of the fall festival circuit, right now Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave" is the awards season horse to beat. Fox Searchlight isn't wasting a second of the momentum out of Toronto and Telluride and with the slavery drama gearing up to hit theatres, another segment from the movie has landed along with a TV spot with a bit more footage as well.

With Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" bouncing to 2014 and Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" potentially doing the same, it seems there is even more room for Steve McQueen's widely praised (our review) "12 Years a Slave" to get comfortable in the pole position (at the moment) of the Oscar season race. And with audiences soon to share in the experience that left many critics shaken, the first clip from the movie has arrived.

12 Years A Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor
There are few films knocking viewers down as hard and as harrowingly this fall as Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave." The British filmmaker returns with his third feature following "Hunger" and "Shame," and this time brings his unique filmmaking skills to one of the toughest chapters of American history. A true story, and told in a manner that is bracing about the brutality of the era, few movies coming before the end of 2013 will move you quite like this.

A Season In The Congo Joe Wright Chiwetel Ejiofor
With "12 Years A Slave" take the Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award over the weekend, it's likely just the first of many accolades to come for the film, it's director and cast, but don't think for a moment that star Chiwetel Ejiofor is going to relax and bask in the awards season glow. It looks like the actor has yet another project lined up, and one that will re-team him with a director with whom he's already experienced success with on the stage.
