Out of The Furnace
In telling the story of a fundamentally decent man's descent into violence and retribution, Scott Cooper's “Out of the Furnace” plants its cues of chilly neo-noir in the claustrophobic corners of America's Rust Belt, and then nearly gets away with its own high-minded meditations. Loyalty and consequence collide in the “Crazy Heart” director's sophomore feature (from Cooper's rewrite of a script originally by Brad Inglesby), but while those themes eventually result in payoffs that are noticeably muted and confused, the film is luckily powered by a powerful trio of performances at its core, and a unique, unpredictable structure that constantly reframes the action in a compelling way.

American Hustle
Last night in Los Angeles on the first full day of programming for AFI Fest this year, director David O. Russell and his eclectic body of cinematic work was celebrated at the historic Egyptian Theatre, and he also brought the first six minutes of his highly-anticipated new film, “American Hustle.” However, a host of technical issues—including screening the first two minutes almost completely without sound—led the director to grow a little ornery (“We should probably shut it off,” he said, before escaping the stage to settle the problem). But even those couldn’t dismantle the comic energy and early promise that his latest effort sampled.

Out Of The Furnace
AFI Fest kicks off in two short days and of the big premieres that could shake up the awards season race will belong to "Out of the Furnace." Scott Cooper's follow-up to his hit country music drama "Crazy Heart" is a grittier character story set in the Rust Belt, where the grasp for the American Dream takes on deadly overtones. And at the center of it all is Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson.

Without any festival appearance or advance screenings for press, David O. Russell's "American Hustle" remains the biggest, most exciting mystery of the fall movie season. Awards player or chewy piece of entertainment? Maybe it's both?

The bond between brothers is one that can't be broken by distance or circumstance, but it can be tested, and it's that chain that's rattled in the upcoming "Out Of The Furnace." As the film gets ready to roll into the awards season mix, a brand new trailer is here, and it looks quite promising indeed.

While some have ceded the Oscar race to "12 Years a Slave," the might of David O. Russell can't be forgotten. On paper, "Silver Linings Playbook" didn't look like much more than a quirky rom-com, but after storming the Toronto International Film Festival and winning over critics and audiences, it played huge with Oscar voters, with eight nominations (the entire lead cast got nods) and a win for Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress. And certainly, while this might look like some high-gloss entertainment, Russell usually has some more subversive notes to play.

Though "Interstellar" is still over a year away from hitting theaters, for Christopher Nolan fans looking for a fix, the forthcoming "The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition" will have plenty to dig into. More than just a box throwing together the three Batman movies, it's coming with a boatload of extra material, some of which is now making its way online.

It would seem that Christopher Nolan is one of the few top-tier directors to have made nary a misstep in his career. While our retrospective from about a year ago, perhaps controversially, argues that his weakest films were "Following" and "Batman Begins," even in those cases they weren't outright failures and still offered many of the techniques, motifs and trademarks that he has established consistently across a strong brace of films. Up next for the director is his secretive (naturally) sci-fi "Interstellar," but before he starts work on that next month he's got one thing to get out of the way first. Blowing out his birthday candles.
