Words And Pictures
It's not every day that you'll find arthouse mainstay Juliette Binoche appearing in what looks like a very familiar rom-com, but perhaps that's part of the allure of "Words And Pictures." And with Clive Owen opposite to woo the actress, one certainly can't complain about the casting.

Blood Ties, Marion Cotillard
There’s no questioning the aesthetics of Guillaume Canet’s handsome-looking “Blood Ties.” Set in 1970’s New York City, the film revels in low-key details: the immaculate wardrobe, the music, the feel.

With the clothes, soundtrack, hair and attitude to match, you might think that Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties" was airlifted out the world of gritty 1970s cinema, and dropped into cinemas this year. Striving to tell an authentic, period-detailed story of brothers, crime and family, Canet's film assembles an all start cast and lights a fuse of tension, action and drama.

The Knick Promo
New York City in the early 1900s was dirty, filthy... a place of innovation, and one of danger, where everyone strived to make the most in a city teeming with opportunity. But whether you were rich or poor, everybody was the same when you went under the knife at Knickerbocker Hospital. And that's where the action is centered in "The Knick," Steven Soderbergh's ten-part miniseries for Cinemax.

The Knick Clive Owen
There's yet another reason to stay away from the multiplex and sit on the couch, and this time it's from the fertile mind of Steven Soderbergh. The director is returning to the small screen (you may have forgotten his short-lived "K-Street") with "The Knick," and some teasers have arrived to give you a little taste.

Certainly, replicating the look of '70s New York City is easy enough — just make everything bigger. The hair, the jeans, the attitude...if you wear it all with confidence and a bit of flamboyance, you can pull it off. And while "Blood Ties" has the look of a Sidney Lumet or William Friedkin movie of the period, it doesn't quite capture the essence of those films. But there are plenty of reasons why should check out it.

Here's a fun fact that escaped us in amidst the flurry of fall festival activity: Guillaume Canet's sprawling crime story saga "Blood Ties" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival running two hours and twenty-four minutes, but by the time it hit Toronto International Film Festival, it had been reduced somewhat significantly to two hours and seven minutes. We're not sure what exactly got trimmed or why, but it seems our observation in our review that "there is a different and possibly shorter edit of this movie that is probably much better" wasn't unique. And it seems that shorter cut is going into wide release...

Blood Ties
Well, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is going to have a run for its money when it comes to sprawling '70s crime sagas that feature really silly hair and mustaches, as the new trailer has just dropped for Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties," starring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, Marion Cotillard and James Caan. The film, which we were iffy about at Cannes, will be screening at the Toronto International Film Festival soon.

Toronto is in the final push of getting things ready for TIFF and it looks like the red carpets will be even starrier, and premieres even bigger than previously thought. With over 80 new films announced today, there won't be a moment to spare this year at the festival, and even more peeks at the upcoming films have arrived.

If “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” represented the height of Cold War paranoia within the British intelligence community, then “Shadow Dancer” is the next chapter, replacing the ominous Russian government with a more localized threat: The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
