Magic In The Moonlight
As one movie opens, another begins production, and that's the way it's been with Woody Allen for years. His latest Euro jaunt, "Magic In The Moonlight," heads to theatres this weekend. Meanwhile, the director is in Rhode Island filming his latest, starring new muse Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix among many others. And it looks like the director is headed back into dramatic territory.

Before I Go To Sleep
The elusive nature of memory can certainly be good fodder for drama. The idea of things remembered, forgotten or selectively recalled motivating the actions of a character is rich territory, but unfortunately, it doesn't really seem to be put to good effect in the forthcoming "Before I Go To Sleep," even when navigated by a cast like this.

Male Perfs In Woody Allen Films
Is it that time of year already? This week, 2014’s Woody Allen film opens. “Magic in the Moonlight” (review here) sees the director back on the frothy-fun-in-foreign-climes form that he’s made a stock in trade recently, after the deviation of last year’s “Blue Jasmine.” That film’s Oscar-winning central turn by Cate Blanchett led us to discuss some of Woody Allen’s best female characters, and if it’s unlikely that “Magic in the Moonlight” will prove the same awards-magnet for any of its cast, there’s certainly enough here to warrant another riffle through Allen’s back catalogue of performances. And with our reviewer calling attention to Colin Firth in particular, who, cast a little against type, “drives his incorrigibly cranky character right to the edge of unsympathetic” but pulls it back just in time to save his sarcastic and cynical illusionist from all-out detestability, perhaps it’s as good a time as any to take a look at Woody’s men.

Review: Woody Allen’s ‘Magic In The Moonlight’ Starring Colin Firth & Emma Stone

Magic In The Moonlight
“Cloquet hated reality but realized it was still the only place to get a good steak,” Woody Allen once wrote in the 1977 short story "The Condemned"—as good as any an example of a raison d’etre for the glib, witty and yet philosophical filmmaker. But also a good exemplar of his outlook on life; bleak and yet slightly hopeful (and always with a dash of wit). Allen’s preoccupation with death and his own mortality is well-documented in his films and prose. And part of that obsession may have been escaping the harshness of reality. But behind all the existential dread that troubled characters like Alvy Singer or Isaac from “Manhattan” really lay the question: is that all there is, this misery of life? Or could there be something more?

Ben Whishaw, Paddington Bear
“After a period of denial, we’ve chosen ‘conscious uncoupling,’” Colin Firth told Entertainment Weekly last month about his role as the voice of “Paddington” bear for The Weinstein Company’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s story character. The Academy Award winner had voiced the character, but dropped out of production mid-way.

Magic In The Moonlight
Woody Allen’s latest is almost upon us, and perhaps in rare form, the director is actually going to be doing press for his upcoming romantic comedy “Magic In The Moonlight," and he'll much to talk about. Set in the South of France in the 1920s, the movie centers around Allen’s fondness for magic, but also hews closely to Allen’s preoccupation with (comically) exploring, life, death and the existential meaning of it all. There’s a lot more to it than what meets the eye.

Magic In The Moonlight
OK, we still know nothing about Woody Allen’s next movie that is shooting in Rhode Island and Providence starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone (some have speculated it’s a college professor/student relationship story). Though there’s word today that Parker Posey is also part of the cast. But otherwise, details are… zilch.

Magic In the Moonlight
For Woody Allen, "Magic In The Moonlight" is already done, in the can, and he's moving on—in fact, he's starting production today on his next film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. But for the rest of us, "Magic In The Moonlight" is still new, and with the film's release fast approaching, a batch of new stills have arrived.

Before I Go To Sleep
In "Memento," Guy Pearce uses Post-it notes, Polaroids and other visual clues to overcome his memory loss to find the truth behind a murder. But maybe all he needed was a good doctor. In the forthcoming "Before I Go To Sleep," Nicole Kidman will also get to the truth behind a crime, thanks to a handy physician, all while trying to manage a condition that sees her memory wiped out every time she goes to bed.

Paddington
It always seemed a bit like an odd fit when Colin Firth signed up to voice the beloved bear "Paddington," and it seems he finally realized too, dropping out of the project, which already has a November 28th release date and has released a couple of trailers. But at least as far as PR goes, everyone is totes cool with it.
