Two teen-centered films from New Line and FilmNation have been quietly picking up steam as of late, and while neither production packs tremendous star power under its respective wings, our latest casting report shows they've decided to pull in some fine character actors and fresh talent instead.

British crime thrillers...every so often a classic rolls around, but you’ve got to wade through a whole heap of sub-par dreck before you find one. The first trailer has hit for Simon Aboud’s (romantically tinged) crime thriller “Comes A Bright Day,” and while nothing on show immediately suggests that it’s going to stray into the classic territory, it certainly looks a cut above the usual cockney geezers, gangsters and guns nonsense. And indeed, our reviewer in Berlin enjoyed it, with reservations, as you can read here. Led by 21 year-old “Submarine” star Craig Roberts – although we maintain he doesn’t look a day older than 16 – the cast also includes Imogen Poots (“Fright Night”), Kevin McKidd (“Trainspotting”) and Timothy Spall.

One of the more impressive screen debuts of last year came from 21-year-old Welsh actor Craig Roberts. A British children's TV veteran (he was the star of "The Story Of Tracy Beaker" and "Young Dracula" among others), Roberts broke out as the pretentious, deluded hero of Richard Ayoade's charming "Submarine," coming across as equal parts Dustin Hoffman, Bud Cort and John Gordon Sinclair (from "Gregory's Girl"), and it seemed to mark the birth of a star.

She’s from New York City, the niece of one of the world’s most recognizable actresses, and has been on the big screen since she was ten years old. He’s from (the considerably less glamorous) Maesycwmmer, Wales, and made his feature film debut as recently as 2010. So, on the surface, Emma Roberts and Craig Roberts appear to have little more in common than merely sharing a surname...and before you ask, no, they’re definitely not related.

Arguably best known as the man responsible for the Channel 4 faux-'80s sci-fi parody "Garth Marenghi's Dark Place" and as the shouting nerd Moss in "The IT Crowd," you've likely seen British comedian Richard Ayoade's work behind the camera, yet been completely unaware. The Arctic Monkeys have recruited his talent for a triple-threat of songs ("Fluorescent Adolescent," "Crying Lightning," "Cornerstone"), not to mention they commissioned him to direct their live show "At The Apollo"; indie-pop staples Super Furry Animals put him to work for "Run Away" which starred BFF Matt Berry; and hipster approved group "Vampire Weekend" hired Ayoade to helm videos for debut album singles "Oxford Comma" and "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." So yeah, not exactly any obscure, Plan-It-X Records musicians on his CV.

Tackling the coming-of-age topic with dark humor and thoughtful style, Richard Ayoade's feature debut "Submarine" is more than an impressive first movie. From the incredible number of accomplished performers (Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor, Paddy Considine, plus the astonishing teen actors Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige) and the impeccable British/French New Wave-inspired looks, the British writer/director looks to be poising himself for a very promising filmmaking career.

Kevin McKidd & Timothy Spall Also In Cast, Paul Smith To Design CostumesWe're not sure if there's ever been a documented case of a romance springing out of a bank robbery. We're pretty sure we'd be too busy trying to not get shot to get our flirt on with an attractive stranger, but maybe that's just us. In the movies, however, nothing seems to get the blood rushing to the important areas than being held up, or holding up: from "The Thomas Crown Affair" to "A Fish Called Wanda" to last year's "The Town," screenwriters seem to believe that heists and the big L-O-V-E go hand in hand.
