Rush,
A movie about car racing featuring Thor and that guy from one of the 'Bourne' movies, directed by the dude whose last few movies were "The Dilemma," "Angels & Demons" and "Frost/Nixon"? No thanks, right? Well, the good news is that Ron Howard's "Rush," which premiered at TIFF last week (our review), is flat out entertaining. It's a sports biopic that doesn't just deal in clichés, but puts forth two strong, flawed personalities and tells their story. It's one that's worth putting on your watch list in a relatively lean month of movies, and a few clips are here to encourage you to do just that.

It's only "rebels, lunatics and dreamers" that decide to get behind the wheel and race for a living, so quips Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) in the early moments of Ron Howard's "Rush," and there's an undeniable logic to his observation. For who else would willingly strap themselves into a fiberglass frame, powered by a 500-horsepower engine to drive at unimaginable speeds around a racetrack, where even the faintest hint of a wrong move could end your life? And who else would embrace the odds where at the beginning of each race year, it's known that an average of two drivers will die out of a field of twenty-five? Well, Lauda is one of those people, as is Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), and together they made worldwide headlines for their intense rivalry and passion for the sport. Howard's film matches that fuel-injected devotion in a film that goes beyond mere sports biopic to tale of two men forged by gasoline, jumpsuits and ambition.

Fifth Estate
It's hard to argue that Julian Assange is one of the most powerful and polarizing figures of our current times. From childhood pranks hacking NASA and National Defense computer systems to exposing the dirty laundry of banks and governments around the world, he has become a hero to those seeking transparency and valuing privacy and a villain to those who believe security also means some secrets are worth keeping. But through it all, Assange has never doubted his convictions, and has boldly defended his actions, speaking broadly of revolution and accountability. And thus one might think a film about the man who continues to make headlines would be equally bold. You would be mistaken.

We really don't get racing at all. Watching a bunch of cars drive around a track for hours on end? Not really our bag, and Universal knows that if they want the '70s-set, racing drama "Rush" to reach an audience beyond Sunday afternoon couch potatoes, they're gonna have to sell this thing. So why not introduce Chris Hemworth's lead character James Hunt like smoldering, sexy, risk-taking hunk? And that's exactly what they do.

Journalist or traitor? Whistleblower or security threat? You might think we're talking about Edward Snowden, but before him was Julian Assange, who may not have been the first activist to shake up governments around the world, but certainly the one with the biggest influence in our times. And now his tale is getting told (whether he likes it or not).

Just a couple of days after the UK trailer came tearing around the track, we now get a U.S. spot for Ron Howard's racing drama "Rush" along with some new pics for the movie that's revving its engine pretty hard, pretty early. We're still months away from the film arriving, but perhaps Universal realizes that racing movies probably need a bit of a harder push than other genres. Good thing that so far, it looks pretty rock solid.

The racing genre as a whole doesn't offer a lot to choose from, particularly when it comes to dramas that just stick to the race track and don't burn your retinas like "Speed Racer" or jack up your experience with 'splosions like the "Fast & Furious" franchise. In fact, it's been a while since we've had a movie set strictly on the race track, but Ron Howard's "Rush" is not only getting behind that wheel, but also telling a great story.
