in The Blood, Gina Carano
With the endless barrage of action films fighting for our attention these days, it's rare to find one anchored by a woman. It's even more rare to find a lead who continually ignores consequences in her search for vengeance, but real life Mixed Martial Arts champion Gina Carano is just that kind of leading lady. Whether it's duking it out with underworld goons or raining down a world of pain on those who threaten her family -- this is one violent femme on a mission.

Celebrate Action Stars After 60
This week, Liam Neeson can be seen in “Non Stop,” the latest in a surprisingly active career as an action star. While Neeson has a history peppered with prestige films here and there, make no mistake, his most recent resumé consists of kicking ass and taking names. What no one mentions is that Neeson, who is soon scheduled to show up in a third “Taken” film, is actually a spectacular 61 years old, which is impressive considering the leaping, punching, and growling he’s done in recent years. Have you seen your parents lately? They can barely open the door and hoodies terrify them.

In The Blood Poster
It has been three years since MMA star Gina Carano stepped out of the ring and kicked ass on the big screen, with her first leading role in Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire." Since then, she hasn't rushed into the movie biz, only banking a role in "Fast & Furious 6" in the interim. But now she's back in leading lady for with "In The Blood" and the first trailer is here.

It was already a bit improbable that "Machete Kills" was made at all, and considering that the sequel made about a third of what the original "Machete" did (a measly $14 million worldwide) it's probably a safe bet that the tossed around trilogy capper "Machete Kills Again...In Space!" probably won't happen. But that's what we figured the first time around, so who knows. In any event, if it never comes to pass, this trailer will live on forever.

Machete Kills
Robert Rodriguez isn't one for false pleasantries: if you didn't like "Machete," you really won't think much of "Machete Kills," and he's okay with that. This sequel to the 2010 actioner seems to exist mostly for his hardcore base and as a favor for good friend Danny Trejo, who plays the pockmarked, laconic hero of the title. Not even original distributor Fox wanted any part of the continued adventures of the Ex-Federale who never met a fireball he couldn't fly through with the grace of an eagle and the fierceness of a tiger, as this adventure comes courtesy of the good folks at Open Road. But this is no course correction: anyone who has ever seen a Rodriguez film, or has seen his career evolve (devolve?) into the bare essentials of camp exploitation, knows what to expect.

Movies That Paved The Way For 'Machete Kills'
Some movies make references to other films, and some movies are nothing but references to other films. "Machete Kills" is one of these movies. Robert Rodriguez's endlessly winking sequel to his 2010 action epic "Machete" (itself an elongated version of a fake trailer he made for his collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, "Grindhouse"), "Machete Kills" piles on the references, allusions, and shout-outs until you can't hardly untangle what is a somewhat original Rodriguez contribution and what is from something the director caught one night on pay cable while trying to get to his recorded episode of "Duck Dynasty." Not that it matters much. "Machete Kills" works best when it becomes a kind of kicky blur.

As “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” continues its sleeper hit success, ABC has decided (per Deadline) to produce a limited series focused on a different White House servant, Paul Jennings. Adapted from Elizabeth Dowling Taylor’s “A Slave in the White House,” the show would focus on Jennings, a Virginia-born slave, as he simultaneously acts as President James Madison’s personal valet and as an anti-slavery activist. The show will be written and co-executive produced by “LUV” filmmakers Sheldon Candis and Justin Wilson, with Candis also handling directorial duties as he did on their first film. For now, the show’s only eyed as a 12-hour limited series though, as “Under the Dome” showed, the life of the show can always be extended in the event of runaway success.

Machete Kills,
"Machete Kills" continues its onslaught of marketing, but is it really doing anything to stoke excitement at this point? Either you're down with Sofia Vergara shooting bullets from her breasts or not, but either way, perhaps some of you on the fence might be convinced by this latest effort.

There's escapist fun, and then there's "Machete Kills," a movie that fully embraces its brainlessness and bad taste, rounding up a bunch of big name stars to chew scenery, blow things up, and show lots of cleavage. And in that spirit, here's a few more peeks at the latest from Robert Rodriguez.

Machete Kills
If you think things shooting from boobs and women getting punched in the vagina is totally irreverent and edgy, and having Charlie Sheen actually say the words "Machete Kills" is some sort of knowing genius, then you're probably a better audience for this movie than we are.
