Review: Dustin Hoffman's 'Quartet' Is An Amiable, Harmless Showcase For Brit Acting Talent

Dustin Hoffman has taken 45 years as both one of our most acclaimed actors, and as a major box office draw, to step behind the camera. In fact, that's not strictly true; Hoffman was the original director of his terminally underrated 1978 crime picture "Straight Time," but struck by indecisiveness early in production, made way for Ulu Grosbard instead. But now, nearly 35 years on, the legendary star has finally completed his debut directorial effort, "Quartet," an adaptation of the play by Ronald Harwood ("The Pianist").

There’s a certain generation of male stars who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s who signify that golden age of American cinema, starring in some of the most acclaimed films of that era while also maintaining long careers as box office draws that continue to this day. Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Warren Beatty -- a line-up of actors that, for the most part, puts today’s A-listers to shame. Well, damn that was fast. And we certainly had our doubts. As we outlined in our review of the first season of "Luck," the HBO horse racing world drama starts off pretty slow, can be frustratingly obtuse at times and is stuffed to bursting with characters and subplots, but by the end of the season it firmly finds its footing and sets up the possibility of a cracker jack second season.

Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins & Michael Gambon Join Maggie Smith & Tom Courtenay In CastIt's somewhat surprising, given that most actors give it a shot at one point or another in their career, even if they never go back to it, that Dustin Hoffman has never stepped behind the camera to direct a film. He has, after all, won awards a-plenty, and been a fully-fledged, albeit unorthodox, giant movie star, for most of his career. The closest Hoffman came to helming a picture was 1978's Straight Time, a project that eventually ended up in the hands of Ulu Grosbard (1995's Georgia) - that is, until now.

First announced early last year, Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut -- an adaptation of Ronald Harwood's stage comedy "Quartet" -- is now set to begin production this fall after the actor-turned-director wraps up on the David Milch-backed HBO horse-racing drama "Luck."
