Jupiter Ascending
The Wachowskis are back and once again, the fate of the universe is at stake, there's lot of prosthetics and ambitious costumes, and a big sci-fi spectacle being readied to hit the big screen. But here's the thing, post-"The Matrix" the sibling pair haven't exactly been box office titans. "Speed Racer" and "Cloud Atlas" were both high stakes stumbles, and one wonders how much of a shot they'll be given if "Jupiter Ascending" also manages to disappoint.

Sam Riley, Eddie Redmayne, Toby Kebbell, Domhnall Gleeson Dr. Doom
Producer Matthew Vaughn and director Josh Trank have been doing everything in their power to distance their “Fantastic Four” reboot from the earlier goofy films. Not content with just casting great young actors as the famous superhero team, the filmmakers are looking to surprise with their villain choice too.

Rising star Eddie Redmayne caught everyone’s eye with his performance in last year’s “Les Miserables" and now is on the verge of landing the biggest movie role of his career thus far. The project is “Theory of Everything” and Redmayne would be playing physicist Stephen Hawking. Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker James Marsh (“Man on Wire”) is set to helm the picture.

To whoever is repping Eddie Redmayne as he makes his way into Hollywood: nice work. The actor has been taking a variety of roles, from the gritty indie "Hick," to the biopic "My Week With Marilyn" to this month's Oscar contending "Les Miserables," all allowing him to flex a few different muscles. And now that he's paid his dues and proved himself, he's getting into the tentpole game.

This is why you can’t pay too much attention to the buzz and get all wrapped up in Twitter noise that all of sudden made everyone go, “Oscar frontrunner!” Early screenings of “Les Miserables” did provoke audiences to burst into applause after certain song performances and yes, many were in tears by the end of the film. And that’s because Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” has two incredible sequences (both of which audiences thundered over in our early screening), but the rest of the movie? Well, maybe not so much.

Marvel sure does like their British and Aussie actors. With "Guardians Of The Galaxy" now less than two years from release, the studio is starting to get the cast in place for what is easily the most ambitious project on their slate (it has an alien tree creature and a pistol-wielding, talking raccoon, guys), and a ridiculously long laundry list of actors have been revealed as possibilities to star.

How quickly a studio (or a trade?) change their minds. Not even a week, it was reported that a trio of indie types -- Brady Corbet, Dane DeHaan and Alden Ehrenreich -- were leading the pack to take over James Franco's old part of Harry Osborne, best pal to Peter Parker, and son of Green Goblin Norman Osborne, in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," the sequel to this summer's tepidly-received superhero reboot. But it seems like either The Hollywood Reporter were acting on old info, or Marc Webb and Sony executives had a major rethink over the weekend, as the same trade now reports that the three previous names are out, and four new, and quite different actors, are now testing for the role.

We gotta ask...what's going with Éponine? As Universal continues going hard on the marketing campaign for "Les Miserables," Samantha Barks seems conspicuously absent from much of it. Secret weapon or stumbling block? Here's hoping for the former, but unfortunately, she isn't in this latest batch of promo images for the movie, snapped by the legendary Annie Leibovtiz for Vogue.

Thus far, the marketing for Universal's upcoming Oscar hopeful "Les Misérables" has been spot on. Promising epic grandeur, emotional and exquisite production values, all with a top flight cast, excitement has been running high. And then there's this....

There's a lot of films this year which are going to go down to the wire when it comes to making their Oscar-targeted release dates. Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" was still announcing casting in May, although it seems to be well on course for its December date. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" was still shooting at the end of July, a risky move for a film that's also heading for a Christmas date. And mega-musical "Les Miserables" wrapped only a few weeks earlier.
