The movie-musical is a difficult nut to crack. The genre's proven the undoing of great filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, and, in the modern era, for every smash big-screen hit like "Chicago" or "Hairspray," there's a "Nine," a "Phantom of the Opera" or a "Rent" stinking up the joint. But this Christmas' big hope has the kind of pedigree that suggests it's got a better run at Oscar and box-office glory than most.

Already conquering the stage, with a Tony award under this belt for his turn in "Red," Eddie Redmayne is now looking to conquer the film world as well. He's got a meaty co-starring role in the forthcoming "My Week With Marilyn" and has the indie flick "Hick" in the bag with Blake Lively and Chloe Moretz. Now he's jumping onto a project that is already locked and loaded for the 2012 Oscar season.

Rising British actor Eddie Redmayne has packed a career’s worth of activity into a short time. He's already won a Tony Award, is well regarded for his stage efforts and is quickly making headway on both the small and big screen. He features in the mini-series "The Pillars Of Earth," has appeared in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and "The Other Boleyn Girl," however, “My Week With Marilyn” is where he’s got his biggest, showiest role to date. As third assistant director Colin Clark, he’s not only got to manage the egos on the set of “The Princess And The Showgirl,” he’s also tasked with being Marilyn Monroe’s unofficial “handler.” And like anyone else who orbited the star, he winds up falling for her.

“My Week With Marilyn” tells the story of Colin Clark, a third assistant director on the set of “The Prince And The Showgirl” who served as mediator between star Marilyn Monroe and the frustrated cast and crew. However, if you heard it from Clark’s memoirs, published long after Monroe’s passing, there was more than just a working relationship between the two of them.

And 5 Other Things Learned From The "My Week With Marilyn" Press Conference At NYFFWe've now reached the midpoint of the New York Film Festival, which means that tonight will see the World Premiere of the festival's Centerpiece, "My Week With Marilyn." While most of NYFF's films have stopped elsewhere on the festival carousel, this is one of the few films to make its world premiere at the fest. (It's certainly the one with the highest profile, that is, until Monday's secret screening anyway.) Based on two memoirs by Colin Clark, "The Prince, The Showgirl And Me: 6 Months On The Set With Marilyn & Olivier" and "My Week With Marilyn," the film is the author's account of working on "The Prince And The Showgirl," a Laurence Olivier-directed film that the acting great costarred in with Marilyn Monroe, who at the time was at the peak of her career. The film stars relative newcomer Eddie Redmayne as 23 year old Clark, Kenneth Branagh as Olivier and Michelle Williams as the iconic Monroe along with Judi Dench, Julia Ormond, Dominic Cooper, Toby Jones, Dougray Scott and Emma Watson who round out the supporting cast.

NYFF ‘11 Review: A Slight & Superficial 'My Week With Marilyn' Often Resembles A Lifetime Movie

Marked by an admirable, but certainly not spectacular performance by Michelle Williams -- in a role she's arguably not very suited for -- some wonderful costuming, set design and locations, and a stand-out supporting turn by Judi Dench, there aren't many other favorable things to say about "My Week With Marilyn," a slight drama with a reputable cast, that still feels through and through like a superficial Lifetime made for TV-movie.

Actress Talks Taking On Iconic Role For whatever reason (perhaps a sudden influx of late-night cable repeats of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"...), Marilyn Monroe is somewhat in vogue. For instance, Andrew Dominik is working on an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' Monroe-centric novel "Blonde," with Naomi Watts. That's a few years off yet, as the director's first heading for crime thriller "Cogan's Trade," but another take on the legendary star has just wrapped in the UK -- "My Week With Marilyn."
