Review: ‘Aftershock’ Is Like ‘Piranha 3D’ Meets ‘The Impossible’

Eli Roth was hailed by none other than genre demigod Quentin Tarantino as “the future of horror” following his debut feature “Cabin Fever,” a grotesquely inventive chiller about a flesh-eating virus that has its way with a group of youngsters out camping in the woods. But since then, Roth hasn’t really lived up to the promise. He made two terrific “Hostel” movies (produced by Mr. Tarantino) but then drifted off the map, appearing as an actor in further QT adventures (“Death Proof,” “Inglourious Basterds”) and producing some forgettable schlock (“The Last Exorcism,” “Man with the Iron Fists”). With “Aftershock,” he makes a returning bid for the title of “the future of horror,” producing, co-writing and starring in a movie that uneasily mixes real-life tragedy with B-movie theatrics, using the 2010 Chilean earthquake as the backdrop for a movie that’s equal parts “Piranha 3D” and “The Impossible.”

Casting Eli Roth as a horny dweeb in South America is either genius or completely misguided, but either way, it's a bit of a switchup to see him as the victim of horrific carnage, rather than the one dispensing it. And this new red band trailer for "Aftershock" doesn't hold back on the babes or bloodsheed.

Before Eli Roth was a very successful filmmaker and producer, he was a regular nerd like everyone else, and like the rest of the planet, he was in line in 1999 eagerly awaiting "Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace." And just like many, many fans of the longtime franchise, he was super bummed, angry and disappointed with what George Lucas delivered. And he let his feelings be known with the power of the pen (or rather, the keyboard).

Okay, so he's not exactly Terrence Malick or Lynne Ramsay, but it's been six years since Eli Roth's last feature-length effort, "Hostel: Part II." And while he's been busy executive producing a handful of movies, putting his stamp on Netflix's upcoming "Hemlock Grove" and helming the "Nation's Pride" short for "Inglourious Basterds," he's back behind the camera and bringing the blood.

Though its title seems to preclude the possibility of further films, the unnecessary sequel to the Eli Roth-produced found-footage horror, “The Last Exorcism Part II,” is set to scare some money out of audiences this March. To date all we’ve seen is a still and a poster, but now the studio has finally released a trailer via Yahoo.

Consider it an early Halloween gift from writer-director Eli Roth that news of his latest horror flick is coming at us fast and furious. As we already know, it’s been five long years now since Roth gave us “Hostel: Part 2,” a film that, like much of his work, proved to be incredibly divisive, but certainly provided evidence that the relatively novice horror auteur was starting to branch out in his career – even if the sequel felt a bit like a spinning of the wheels. He’s spent the last five years starring in buddy Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds,” and producing everything from hits like “The Last Exorcism” to Chilean earthquake terror “Aftershock” (which he also acted in), but now he really is stepping back behind the camera.

Despite all the premieres of awards contenders, the Toronto International Film Festival, like many festivals these days, is very genre friendly, at least late at night -- “The Raid” premiered last year as part of the midnight screening series -- and one of the higher profile films is the Eli Roth-starring disaster film “Aftershock.” Co-written by Roth and helmer Nicolas Lopez, the film follows a group of attractive young people who “are having the best of times whooping it up in a dance club [in Chile], until a violent earthquake brings the entire city down around them.” The story is a straight-up natural disaster film, with the danger being “looters, escaped convicts, and the inevitable aftershocks.” We’re not really sold on Roth as an actor, but as long as the film stays squarely in shlock territory it shouldn’t be a problem. In what Deadline is calling "the first significant distribution deal for a film playing at Toronto," Bob Weinstein's Dimension Films is set to acquire "Aftershock" (which is screening at the festival) and the soon-to-film "Clown," both produced by "Hostel" mastermind and "Inglourious Basterd" bastard Eli Roth. The report states that each film will have a minimum guarantee of $2 million, plus a guarantee of a wide theatrical rollout.
