Review: 'Maniac' Remake Starring Elijah Wood

Of course Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, the dirtbag auteurs that turned Joe Dante's gleeful "Jaws" send up "Piranha" into "Piranha 3D," a hilarious, excessively violent screed about American over-indulgence, would spearhead a remake of 1980's "Maniac," a notoriously misogynistic Bill Lustig horror movie whose poster, featuring a man holding the bloody scalp of a young woman, still elicits cries of outrage. Most filmmakers would be too scared to approach the material; it practically glows it's so toxic. But when thinking about these two, who also turned Wes Craven's backwoods horror romp "The Hills Have Eyes" into an angry, gore-soaked metaphor for Bush-era American intervention and culpability, well, why the fuck wouldn't they, really?

He's launched his own horror production company and has number of genre flicks on his slate, and his latest endeavor finds him losing an arm. Not literally of course.

With the exception of the FX comedy “Wilfred,” Elijah Wood has kept a low-profile since the “Lord Of The Rings” trilogy ended, sticking to indies and genre fare, and he continues in that latter vein, joining the horror movie “Cooties.” Written by “Glee” co-creator Ian Brennan and “Insidious” scribe Leigh Whannell, the film stars Wood as “an unlikely hero [who] must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives against” elementary school students whom are transformed “into a feral swarm of mindless savages” after a mysterious virus hits. Commercial and music video director Ace Norton will be making his feature length directorial debut.

While Elijah Wood could just sit back and count his Frodo money on an island somewhere, the actor is using that success to try different things, even if they don't always work out (we're looking at you "The Oxford Murders"). He's taken a strong indie route, lending his talents to a variety of movies including the rom-com "Celeste & Jesse Forever," the absurd comedy "Revenge For Jolly!," the horror remake "Maniac" and more. But perhaps one of his more succesful ventures has been on the small screen with FX series "Wilfred" and he's hoping he can bring that magic to the big screen.

To say the Comic-Con crowd is a little excited about the long-awaited release of the first “The Hobbit” movie this holiday season would be the understatement of the century. Saturday morning’s Hall H line was quite possibly the longest in the convention’s history, which could be attributed partially to other big guns such as “Django Unchained” and “Man of Steel,” but it’s hard to imagine the legendarily loyal Tolkien faithful didn’t play the biggest part in the mob scene.
