While Elijah Wood could just sit back and count his Frodo money on an island somewhere, the actor is using that success to try different things, even if they don't always work out (we're looking at you "The Oxford Murders"). He's taken a strong indie route, lending his talents to a variety of movies including the rom-com "Celeste & Jesse Forever," the absurd comedy "Revenge For Jolly!," the horror remake "Maniac" and more. But perhaps one of his more succesful ventures has been on the small screen with FX series "Wilfred" and he's hoping he can bring that magic to the big screen.

To say the Comic-Con crowd is a little excited about the long-awaited release of the first “The Hobbit” movie this holiday season would be the understatement of the century. Saturday morning’s Hall H line was quite possibly the longest in the convention’s history, which could be attributed partially to other big guns such as “Django Unchained” and “Man of Steel,” but it’s hard to imagine the legendarily loyal Tolkien faithful didn’t play the biggest part in the mob scene.

As far as ludicrous movie pitches go, the "'Speed' with a piano' logline for "Grand Piano" is up there with "Snakes On A Plane" and "Burning Bright" (don't remember "Burning Bright?" That was the one where the girl from "Step Up 2" and her autistic brother are trapped in their house by a hurricane, only to be stalked by an escaped tiger. Seriously). The film, announced a week or two back, is set to star Elijah Wood as a concert pianist with stagefright forced to play the concert of his life in order to save his life, and his wife, after finding a threat on his sheet music. Again, we're not making this up.

We gotta admit, when we first heard about Elijah Wood starring in a remake of the 1980 splatter pic "Maniac," we figured it was just going to be another run of the mill genre outing. And having Franck Khalfoun -- the guy who directed two movies you didn't see, "P2" and "Wrong Turn At Tahoe" -- at the helm didn't exactly bolster our confidence. But when the movie selected for the Midnight lineup at the Cannes Film Festival, we wondered, could it be something more?

Amid lots of “Fast & Furious 6” casting and speculation – Luke Evans? Really? – it’s nice to be able to report on some definitive (and high-profile) casting on a couple of upcoming movies. Pierce Brosnan and Elijah Wood have each lined up a new project, and we can tell you a little bit about those roles.

Tribeca Review: Despite Myriad Celebrity Cameos 'Revenge For Jolly!' Is Excruciating

Kudos to Brian Petsos, a bit actor who has pulled off an Orson Welles-level achievement in not only nabbing a brilliant cast to star in “Revenge For Jolly!” which he wrote, but also having the clout to save the lead role for himself. Welles did this with his talent, vision and status as a cinematic titan. Petsos, if we’re being charitable, most likely had to resort to blackmail, extortion and/or just plain bribery, as “Revenge For Jolly!” may be the most excruciating 80+ minutes you spend in a theater this year.

They say patience is a virtue, and in the world of film development, that's especially true. While "Black Wings Has My Angel" may seem new, this one has actually been brewing since around 2007. A couple of years ago, Elijah Wood signed on to the lead role in the hardboiled pic and then word when quiet, but it finally looks like the pieces are coming together.

More than a few were skeptical when the Alexandre Aja-directed remake of slasher-classic "Maniac" was announced, with Elijah Wood stepping into the gnarled, grotesquely-unattractive shoes of Joe Spinell. But they seem to have found a way around this, as Wood revealed to MTV at Sundance that the film was, "...entirely in P.O.V. You only ever see me in reflections and occasionally there are out-of-body experiences where you see more of me." While it's a dubious proposition to capture a film with a time and location so integral to its own identity, a fresh approach like this seems wise. Consider this: it could have easily become a found-footage movie.

Review: 'Happy Feet Two' Feels Stuck, Motionless & Terribly Cold

There is some precedence for being genuinely excited about "Happy Feet Two" (yes, the number is spelled out). For one, the original film, 2006's "Happy Feet," was more slyly subversive than a movie about tap-dancing penguins has any right to be, with a strong thematic undercurrent that championed not only individualism but, more boldly, atheism. Plus, director George Miller, who co-directed the original (with Warren Coleman and Judy Morris) assumes chief creative control this time around, has a history of whacked-out sequels, having not only crafted the glorious "Mad Max" flick "The Road Warrior," but also the darkly hued follow-up to the sunny Best Picture-nominated "Babe," the altogether unclassifiable "Babe: Pig in the City." Plus, the trailers for "Happy Feet Two" promised a subplot about a pair of shrimp-like crustaceans (voiced by Matt Damon and Brad Pitt) on a journey of their own, which is pretty fucking weird. Sadly, though, "Happy Feet Two" is neither as visually inventive or politically in-your-face. Like many of its feathered stars, the sequel feels stuck, motionless, and terribly cold.

It looks like Elijah Wood is ready to get back in touch with his evil side. After surprising many with his turn as the silent Kevin in "Sin City," the actor will followup his time in the shire by killing some people. Cinematically speaking, of course.
