Lovely and devastating, challenging yet worthwhile, Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" may be the English filmmaker's best since "Orlando," and perhaps her most accessible to date. The intimate and sensual picture also features yet another terrific performance by 14-year-old Elle Fanning, who is quickly becoming the most compelling teenage actor working in movies today. But this time, as the lead, Fanning is transformative, heartbreakingly conveying the inner life of an adolescent with an almost eerily nuanced command of her craft.

Certainly less well-known that his much more famous sister and parents, Jake Paltrow has nonetheless been quietly making his own mark. In 2007 he delivered his feature debut "The Good Night," which admittedly didn't make much of a splash. But for his sophomore effort, he's certainly raising his game.

So Sigur Ros' latest album Valtari came out last spring and they've used it as an opportunity to corral a number of artists and directors to helm videos for each song on the album. While none will likely top Shia LaBeouf's wang-bearing work in "Fjogur Piano," the Icelandic post-rock group is still attracting big talent to what they have dubbed their "Mystery Film Experiment."

Given that upstart indie distributors usually don't have a chance against major studios or more established competitors when it comes to campaigning for its stars, if we were running things, Elle Fanning would be getting a nomination for "Ginger & Rosa." It's a film we loved at Telluride -- easily one of the highlights -- and we called Fanning's performance "transformative." And now that it's gearing up to open overseas, and the first clip from the movie has arrived.

Is director Sally Potter finally having her moment? While "Orlando" put her on the arthouse map in 1992, the ensuing years haven't been easy -- Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Focus Features could not help "The Man Who Cried" earn more than $1.7 million globally in 2000, and 2004's "Yes" was killed by a scathing review in Variety even though audiences at the festival adored it. That has still made Potter gunshy about festivals, Telluride in particular, where "Yes" was brutalized.
