There are few young actresses right now who are on quite the same trajectory as Elle Fanning. With directors like Cameron Crowe, J.J. Abrams, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola, David Fincher, Tony Scott and Alejandro González Iñárritu already on her impressive CV, we can only imagine an Academy Award nomination isn't too far away. Her work just seems to be getting better and better, and her latest turn in Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" may be her best yet.

Among some higher profile competition, one of our editor-in-chief's favorite films from his time in Telluride last weekend turned out to be "Ginger & Rosa," a coming-of-age tale from director Sally Potter ("Orlando"). Probably the most accessible film to date from a filmmaker whose last picture was shot on a cellphone (2009's "Rage"), it's a Bildungsroman set in 1960s Britain with Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert (the daughter of Jane Campion) as two best friends discovering protest, sex and betrayal together. With Alessandro Nivola, Christina Hendricks, Oliver Platt, Timothy Spall, Jodhi May and Annette Bening among the top-notch supporting cast, it was the best little surprise of the festival, a film that's "lovely and devastating, challenging yet worthwhile."

Lovely and devastating, challenging yet worthwhile, Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" may be the English filmmaker's best since "Orlando," and perhaps her most accessible to date. The intimate and sensual picture also features yet another terrific performance by 14-year-old Elle Fanning, who is quickly becoming the most compelling teenage actor working in movies today. But this time, as the lead, Fanning is transformative, heartbreakingly conveying the inner-life of an adolescent with an almost eerie and nuanced command of her craft.

Maybe we should call it Annette Bening day. The actress features in two new photos from two films arriving on the film festival circuit. First up is "Imogene," which is a starring vehicle for Kristen Wiig, developed by the 'SNL' comedienne before she took off in "Bridesmaids." Directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman ("American Splendor"), the picture centers on a washed-up playwright (Wiig) who, after faking her own suicide as a ploy to get her ex-boyfriend's attention, winds up remanded to the custody of her wackily dysfunctional family. The picture also co-stars Bening, as you can see by the photo, Matt Dillon and "Glee" star Darren Criss.

Last year was like a big coming out party for Elle Fanning. The actress gave impressive performances in films as disparate as J.J. Abrams’s “Super 8,” Cameron Crowe's "We Bought A Zoo" and Francis Ford Coppola's "Twixt," with all of these following her breakout turn in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” the year before. So it’s no wonder that her profile is continuing to rise, and Deadline reports that Fanning will star in the young adult novel adaptation “Olive’s Ocean.”

One thing the TIFF announcement is always good for is reminding you of a few films that have been flying somewhat under the radar, and weren't necessarily expected to be seen before the end of the year. And the flurry of new images for Toronto-bound pictures has seen the first image from three such pictures, as well as one extra from another film that's similarly quiet-ish at present.

It was perhaps inevitable that Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian was going to move into filmmaking. For anyone who has followed the band over the years, you know that each album has usually arrived with an extensive story build around it, with appropriately theatrical artwork to go with it. Well, following a Kickstarter campaign and with the support of "Rushmore" producer Barry Mendel, the pieces all came together this spring for "God Help The Girl" with Elle Fanning and Brit actor Olly Alexander nabbing roles, but it looks like with production set to get underway, some changes have been made.

As occasionally popular as it can be ("Chicago" and "Hairspray" being some of the more recent hits), the musical hasn't changed much since its earliest film incarnations. "Moulin Rouge" aside (a film that experimented more with style than with form), films like "Mamma Mia" and the upcoming "Rock of Ages" could essentially have been 1930s musical comedies (apart from their pop soundtracks), and this year's Oscar hopeful "Les Miserables" is a 25-year-old stage show based on a 150-year-old novel.

Pitched somewhere between an earnest and romantically idealistic chronicle of loss and hope and a poignant examination of grief and bitter pains of family, Cameron Crowe's "We Bought A Zoo," occasionally still slathers it on too thick with the saccharine sentimentality and telegraphed romantic clichés, but by and large, the picture still succeeds in its heartwarming aims thanks to its naked, heart-on-its sleeve sincerity. Not an easy trick in an age of cynicism and information, but one that ultimately works regardless.
