There are few filmmakers whose work is as instantly recognizable as Darren Aronofsky's. His subject matter has differed wildly, from Kabbalistic mathematical conspiracies to drug addiction to high-class ballet to Biblical apocalypse in this weekend's "Noah." But his heart-on-its-sleeve, unsubtle (that's not a knock, necessarily), highly cinematic, uniquely stylized films couldn't possibly be mistaken for anyone else's, even as their content proves ever-surprising.

It may have taken Guillermo Del Toro five years between "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" and this summer's "Pacific Rim," but the filmmaker isn't wasting a hot second as he heads in 2014. He'll kick off the year shooting "Crimson Peak" and by time the summer arrives he'll be on the small screen too.

Just a few days after Russell Crowe's latest project "Fathers and Daughters" was announced, he now has a co-lead. Amanda Seyfried will reteam with her "Les Misérables" co-star in the time-spanning tale will follow a novelist and widow in the past, who struggles to raise his 5-year-old daughter while he battles mental illness. The movie will also catch up 30 years later with the daughter, now in the present day, as she tries to reconcile with the difficult childhood.

While James McTeigue for a moment seemed like the next great blockbuster hopeful following "V For Vendetta," the diminishing returns of "Ninja Assassin" and "The Raven" have found him directing his leanest movie yet. Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson and Angela Bassett will star in "Survivor," a thriller that'll shoot in January.

The stars continue to align for Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi epic "Interstellar." Already with the likes of Matthew McConaughy, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, and Bill Irwin on board, the supporting cast is rounding out with Ellen Burstyn, "Twilight" actress Mackenzie Foy, and "Homeland" actor Timothee Chalamet.
