Magic In The Moonlight
As one movie opens, another begins production, and that's the way it's been with Woody Allen for years. His latest Euro jaunt, "Magic In The Moonlight," heads to theatres this weekend. Meanwhile, the director is in Rhode Island filming his latest, starring new muse Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix among many others. And it looks like the director is headed back into dramatic territory.

Bradley Cooper Emma Stone Cameron Crowe Untitled Hawaii
With release schedules in the fall generally packed with tentpoles trying to muscle their way between Oscar contenders, it can be tough to try and fit something in that's neither. And certainly, Cameron Crowe's upcoming untitled rom-com would've faced stiff competition. Originally set for a Christmas Day release, the movie has now been pushed to next spring, and it looks like a wise move.

Magic In The Moonlight
“Cloquet hated reality but realized it was still the only place to get a good steak,” Woody Allen once wrote in the 1977 short story "The Condemned"—as good as any an example of a raison d’etre for the glib, witty and yet philosophical filmmaker. But also a good exemplar of his outlook on life; bleak and yet slightly hopeful (and always with a dash of wit). Allen’s preoccupation with death and his own mortality is well-documented in his films and prose. And part of that obsession may have been escaping the harshness of reality. But behind all the existential dread that troubled characters like Alvy Singer or Isaac from “Manhattan” really lay the question: is that all there is, this misery of life? Or could there be something more?

Magic In The Moonlight
Woody Allen’s latest is almost upon us, and perhaps in rare form, the director is actually going to be doing press for his upcoming romantic comedy “Magic In The Moonlight," and he'll much to talk about. Set in the South of France in the 1920s, the movie centers around Allen’s fondness for magic, but also hews closely to Allen’s preoccupation with (comically) exploring, life, death and the existential meaning of it all. There’s a lot more to it than what meets the eye.

Magic In The Moonlight
OK, we still know nothing about Woody Allen’s next movie that is shooting in Rhode Island and Providence starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone (some have speculated it’s a college professor/student relationship story). Though there’s word today that Parker Posey is also part of the cast. But otherwise, details are… zilch.

Magic In the Moonlight
For Woody Allen, "Magic In The Moonlight" is already done, in the can, and he's moving on—in fact, he's starting production today on his next film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. But for the rest of us, "Magic In The Moonlight" is still new, and with the film's release fast approaching, a batch of new stills have arrived.

Magic In The Moonlight
What do we know about Woody Allen’s “Magic In The Moonlight” so far? Well, besides a new poster that had the whole Internet up in arms because of its poor Photoshop—despite the fact that poor Photoshopped movie posters are a dime a dozen—quite a bit. Though since I’ve not watched the trailer—saving myself for the movie—I feel personally a little bit more in the dark in terms of flavor.

Birdman
Earlier this month, the first trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" dropped and it was kind of bonkers awesome. But what on Earth is it about? “It’s less about a guy who played a superhero in big hit movies than it is about exploring the human soul and psyche, and also where we are as a society today and how much importance we place on those kinds of things,” the film's star Michael Keaton told EW. So certainly, not your average comedy or drama by stretch, but the firepower behind the movie is undeniable.

Birdman,
Well, our week just got a whole lot better, because the trailer (and poster) for one of our most anticipated films of the year has arrived. We've been enormously curious about "Birdman," partly because it's the latest film from one of our favorites, Alejandro Alejandro González Iñárritu (or Alejandro G. Iñárritu, as the trailer now bills him), and partly because the film promised to be something of a departure, apparently a more comic vibe for a filmmaker whose work before now, like "Amores Perros," "21 Grams," "Babel" and "Biutiful," has tended towards the bleak.

Magic In The Moonlight
Is it time for Woody Allen to start taking a break between pictures? Yes, his work ethic is admirable but sometimes it feels like he's just going through the motions, and as reliably comforting as his annual movies are, and as decent as thoroughly "Magic In The Moonlight" looks, it's clear he's running through some familiar plot elements.
