Oscar Snubs, Surprises: 2014
Well, the Oscar nominations are in and Twitter has exploded with the usual flurry of WTF?s, OMG!s and TOLDJA!s (perhaps we follow the wrong people). And while in general it seems like a lot of the last-minute trend predictions went in the right direction (Redford went very cool for “All is Lost,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” too, though perhaps not quite icy enough to predict a near-total shut-out), in amongst the various entirely expected nominations, there were a fair number of films and performances we didn’t expect to see, and a few we had to double check we didn’t (you can read our full predictions here to see how right and wrong we were).

Saving Mr. Banks
Though the general public doesn't always share their enthusiasm, Hollywood loves making movies about itself. Whether fictional or based in reality, it's rare for a year to pass without some kind of film about filmmaking, from classics like "Sunset Boulevard" and "Mulholland Drive" to, uh, not-classics like "Hitchcock." In recent years, "The Artist" and "Argo" have both been critical and commercial successes (and not coincidentally, Best Picture Oscar winners), and Disney are clearly hoping that the same kind of success follows for "Saving Mr. Banks," which examines one of the family friendly company's most beloved films, 1964's "Mary Poppins," and their own founder and figurehead, Walt Disney, here played by megastar Tom Hanks.

Her, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams
So how influential are the National Board Of Review winners? Well, last year "Zero Dark Thirty" won Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress and went on to be shut out in all three categories when the Oscars rolled out. Basically, just remember that there is a gulf between critics and Academy voters (remember the year when "The Social Network" cleaned up in the all early awards?) so just take a breath. That said, it's nice to see the love.

From true life stories, to sassy period tales to rich domestic dramas, this year's crop of contending actresses have had some great material to dive into. And when rounding up Amy Adams ("American Hustle"), Emma Thompson ("Saving Mr. Banks"), Julia Roberts ("August: Osage County"), Octavia Spencer ("Fruitvale Station") and Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years A Slave") THR undoubtedly has wealth of things to talk about, from their films to the wide range of experience in the biz.

Saving Mr. Banks
An oooey-gooey love letter by Disney to themselves, or an actual movie with real drama and emotion? That's question surrounding the upcoming "Saving Mr. Banks," the movie about the journey to get "Mary Poppins" on the big screen. And the good news is: the movie works. Our review out of the BFI London Film Festival notes, the film is "moving, and nicely captures the creative process in a way that some movies-about-movies struggle with." And now you can check out a whole lot more of what's in store from the film.

Received wisdom has it that, in most years, the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards is less competitive than their male equivalent. It's certainly true, if it even needs to be said, that great roles for women are far, far less common than they are for men. But one only has to think of the performances that haven't been nominated in recent years to realize that it's not the lack of talent out there, so much as the Academy, or even the prognosticators, tending to be a little more conservative in their picks.

While James McTeigue for a moment seemed like the next great blockbuster hopeful following "V For Vendetta," the diminishing returns of "Ninja Assassin" and "The Raven" have found him directing his leanest movie yet. Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson and Angela Bassett will star in "Survivor," a thriller that'll shoot in January.

Saving Mr. Banks Tom Hanks Emma Thompson
The talent is immense and extensive—Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Ruth Wilson and more—the story is interesting (the true tale of Walt Disney's attempt to get "Mary Poppins" made, and it's Oscar chances solidified by having John Lee Hancock, the director behind the feel-good smash hit “The Blind Side,” at the helm. So then why does the first trailer for "Saving Mr. Banks" feel like a long three-minute commercial for the magic of Walt Disney and its resorts?
