Making A Scene Cate Blanchett
When Janusz Kaminski isn’t lensing his often Oscar-nominated work on a batch of Steven Spielberg’s finest films, including “Schindler’s List," “Saving Private Ryan," and most recently “Lincoln," the cinematographer also occasionally settles into the director’s chair. Three films (including the underwhelming Winona Ryder horror “Lost Souls”) and a TV episode of “The Event” have allowed Kaminski full cinematic reign so far, and just as Canon performed with their own short film campaign this month that found actors at the helm, the NY Times have created their own — and allowed Kaminski 11 unique vignettes within which to work.

It's been a while since we heard the name Alejandro Amenábar. After a terrific run of films including "Open Your Eyes," "The Others" and "The Sea Inside," the filmmaker stumbled slightly with his epic "Agora." But it looks like he's ready to return with a new film "Regression," which will star Ethan Hawke. Plot details are being kept secret for now, but it's being called an "elevated genre project," according to Variety, and one that will play with "our deepest primal fears." Production will begin next spring.

Andrew Niccol Ethan Hawke Lord Of War
Is it safe to say that this has been a pretty good year for Ethan Hawke? First, “Before Midnight” comes out to rave reviews across the board, then “The Purge” winds up being a surprise box office hit over the summer, and in “Getaway”… Okay, let’s just pretend that one never happened. Point is, “Before Midnight” and “The Purge” were each successful in their own right and the directors of both films were each filmmakers Ethan Hawke had collaborated with before. So, naturally, Hawke’s next move would be to work with another former collaborator, right?

All good things must come to an end, and Ethan Hawke's glorious summer of 2013, in which he starred in the most universally beloved indie darling of the year ("Before Midnight") alongside a bona fide horror movie hit ("The Purge"), has now come to an inglorious finale with his starring role in the ridiculously stupid car chase movie "Getaway." As artless as "Before Midnight" was arty and plodding as "The Purge" was thrilling, "Getaway" is like slamming your foot on the gas while the car is still in park. There's a whole lot of wheel spinning but it never really goes anywhere.

It seems things on Richard Linklater's secretive, years-in-the-making "Boyhood" are moving along faster than even Ethan Hawke predicted. It was just a few months ago that the actor said the movie was still about two years off, but it seems the sands in the hour glass are sliding through much more quickly than expected.

Movie villains are a special breed, usually choosing to hatch elaborate, complicated schemes to complete a goal that would probably be easier to execute if they just went and did it themselves the old-fashioned way. So when some random bad guy wants something from a bank, does he hire a bunch of goons to rob the place? Maybe commit some kind of fraud to get his hands on it? Nope, he gets a race car driver to do his bidding for him all while on a ticking clock...

Though he doesn't get nearly the same blowback as James Franco, Ethan Hawke is also something a multi-hyphenate as a writer/actor/director/author and he also knows his way around Shakespeare too. He ushered in the new millenium with "Hamlet," teaming with director Michael Almereyda for a contemporary retelling that kept the language and brought in a pretty decent bunch of actors—Bill Murray, Sam Shepard, Kyle MacLachlan, Julia Stiles, Liev Schreiber, Steve Zah, Jeffrey Wright, Casey Affleck, Tim Blake Nelson—to tell the Bard's most famous tale. Now Hawke and Almereyda are going old school again, although with a story that hasn't really been brought to the big screen.

There's ambitious, there's ballsy, and then there's Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" (previously known as "Growing Up"). In case you're playing catchup, Linklater's project -- which he has been working on for over a decade -- stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as parents raising a young boy, played by Ellar Salmon, in a drama that will chronicle the life of the child from age of six through to the twelfth grade. The clever part is that Linklater has quietly been shooting parts of the movie every year since 2002, allowing his lead (and the characters around) age and mature with a realism we can't imagine has been captured on camera before (at least outside of Michael Apted's "7 Up" series). Aside from that, not much else is known about the movie but it looks like we may be seeing it very soon.

Rarely do horror films these days luxuriate in big ideas. Instead, they are usually a simple formula, based on a rudimentary conceptual framework (cameras capture supernatural activity, madman devises ingenious torture traps), stretched painfully thin over 90 minutes or so. One of the things that makes "The Purge," a new high-concept horror movie about a utopian society with a very dark secret, so refreshing, is that it actually takes the time to engage in some truly provocative and subversive ideas, and what's more -- these thematic interests never come at the expense of the thrills. "The Purge" manages to be smart, scary, and subversive. In the current horror landscape, this is much rarer than a demonic possession or capturing a ghost on videotape.
