As you already know, Whitney Houston tragically passed away over the weekend, in a shocking death that brought in condolences from around the world. The chart topping singer had spent most of the last few years more on the tabloid pages than on the pop charts, but was poised for something of a comeback in the remake of the '70s musical "Sparkle," which is still set to hit theaters later this summer. And if all had gone according to plan, she would have also returned to one of the her biggest and most beloved screen roles, and while the details are still being worked out, it seems it will go on without her.

After early supporting roles in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Color of Money," "Platoon," "Stakeout" and "Good Morning, Vietnam," Forest Whitaker finally landed a leading role, winning Best Actor at Cannes in the process, in 1988's "Bird" the biopic of jazz legend Charlie Parker directed by Clint Eastwood. Nearly 25-years-on, it looks like the actor-director is finally returning to another jazz icon, stepping behind the camera this time, although enlisting the help of his old collaborator on the film.

Forest Whitaker isn't just an actor with thirty years experience in front of the camera, or an Oscar-winning movie star, but in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he also managed to carve out a second career as a director, debuting with the immensely successful "Waiting To Exhale" before going on to helm the Sandra Bullock vehicle "Hope Floats" and Katie Holmes-led "First Daughter."

This project’s got direct-to-BluRay written all over it. The components include a boring cast: Michael Chiklis and Forest Whitaker (reteaming after both serving time on "The Shield"), Ray Liotta and Common, a first-time director (David A. Armstrong), and a title so generic, you’ll be convinced there’s another film in theatres/in a Walmart bargain bin right now with the exact same name (“Pawn”).

Get it!? It's like catch-22 but like, with a gun! It's a pun! Yep, "Catch .44" is the name of this (pretty much) straight-to-DVD effort starring Bruce Willis and for those of you who are bowing at the altar of Megan Ellison, let it be known that this is an Annapurna Production. Nobody is perfect.

Harry Dean Stanton Also JoinsEven at 64 years old, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still capable of surprises -- and we're not just talking about bastard children. The action star's career has pretty much been one blockbuster movie after another to varying degrees of success but he's certainly never done something like "The Last Stand." A modestly budgeted quasi-western, with a gaggle of character actors in supporting roles, all in a film marking the Hollywood debut by a foreign filmmaker, in this case, “I Saw the Devil” helmer Kim Ji-woon. We're definitely curious and now that production is officially underway, a few more names have joined the genuinely random, sort of WTF cast.

Sanaa Lathan & Mike Epps Also On BoardIn theory, winning an Oscar is meant to provide a boost to your career. In theory. But somehow, the four and a half years since Forest Whitaker took home a golden man for his portrayal of Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" have provided a series of diminishing returns. Aside from a handful of exceptions, both his Oscar-bait films like "Hurricane Season" and "The Great Debaters" and would-be commercial properties like "Street Kings" and "Repo Men" tanked, while an alarming number of his pictures seem to be skipping theatrical release entirely, and he spent last year leading the swiftly-cancelled CBS procedural "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior."

You may not remember, but there was a time when movies aimed at black audiences weren't the lowest level denominator tripe of Tyler Perry films. Way back in 1995, "Waiting to Exhale," directed by Forest Whitaker and starring Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, Dennis Haysbert and Gregory Hines, told the story of four black women dealing with their relationships and men and it touched a cultural nerve. The film was not only a hit at the box office, but it spawned a best-selling soundtrack probably best known for the singles “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” by Whitney Houston and “Not Gon’ Cry” by Mary J. Blige. And it looks like there’s more adventures on the way for Savannah, Bernadine, Robin and Gloria.

Forest Whitaker Also Circling RoleFor the love of god Robert De Niro, fire your agent. The once-esteemed actor, who has spent the most part of the last decade or two slogging it out in one mediocre picture after another, apparently doesn't know a good movie anymore even if it walks up and bites him in the ass. The actor hemmed and hawed over the drama "Honeymoon With Harry" to the point where director Jonathan Demme gave up on the project. So what to do next? How about another shitty movie with 50 Cent!
