Rosewater
The category of Iranian prison movies with feel-good endings is a small subgenre, and one that "Rosewater" is likely to have all to itself for the near future. With his feature film writing and directing debut, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart clearly wanted to make a people-have-the-power message picture that would resonate at least as much with American youths as longtime students of political repression in the Middle East. That transparent desire to make the material as accessible as possible to U.S. moviegoers — starting with the old-fashioned notion of having all the Iranians speaking to each other exclusively in English — results in a sometimes overly slick take on potentially tough subject matter. For better or worse, torture-themed films don’t get too much easier to take than this one.

Rosewater
An Oscar-ready release date. An International Premiere slated for the Toronto International Film Festival. Pretty nice work for first-time director Jon Stewart, right? Today, the first images from his debut, "Rosewater," have arrived, and it indicates that the film is no comedy.

It's probably not a total shock that a miniseries adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s doorstop "War And Peace" is being described as "the most ambitious event series ever made for the BBC." But it is interesting to see some of the actors being sought. Paul Dano and Lily James have been offered roles in the production, with the former eyed for "Pierre Bezukhov, the awkward illegitimate son who rises in society but leads a tumultuous life as he seeks to overcome his emotions" and the latter as Natasha Rostova, who falls in love with him. The plan is for this one to air in 2015 in the UK, so expect things to start coming together soon.

Mozart In The Jungle
If Amazon Studios is trying to get into the streaming game alongside Netflix, they've got to step up their PR game a bit. While we did know they had put a bunch of pilots online this week, including Roman Coppola's "Mozart In The Jungle," we had no idea some peeks via clips were available too. In fact, we stumbled across these completely by accident—but we're glad we did.

No stranger to the small screen—he’s directed quite a few ads this year along with Arcade Fire’s cool TV special—Roman Coppola is helming a comedy pilot for Amazon and he’s found his leading man. Deadline reports Gael García Bernal—who stars in Jon Stewart’s forthcoming directorial debut, “Rosewater”—will lead the Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Jason Timbers-written project as “an enfant terrible who’s utterly devoted to his art as a conductor - but also to his image.”

To say that "Gravity" is highly anticipated is an understatement, and it's easily the ticket to have for anyone hitting Venice this week, or TIFF next week. And as the marketing for the 3D space thriller ramps up with some TV spots hitting, director Alfonso Cuaron is helping his son Jonas Cuaron — co-writer on "Gravity" — get his next feature off the ground.

As the red carpets are rolled up and the screening rooms shut for another year, a final few nuggets of casting news reach us from Cannes. First, via The Wrap, is some news on “Rosewater,” the film Jon Stewart is taking 12 weeks off "The Daily Show" this summer to shoot (don’t panic, John Oliver will be hosting in his absence). Despite Stewart’s comedic day job, "Rosewater" is a drama, based on a true story about Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was detained in Iran while covering the 2009 elections there.

Gael Garcia Bernal has made such a name for himself over the years, naturally any project he gets involved with these days will perk our interest. He most recently starred in “No,” the Chilean film which garnered acclaimed when it debuted in Cannes last May, leading to an eventual Foreign Language Oscar nomination. Now Participant Media, the studio that produced “No,” looks to get involved with the Mexican actor once again, this time heading out east to Argentina.
