One movie that's showing up on a handful of top ten lists for 2012 -- including our own Drew Taylor -- is the time-bending "Looper." Indeed, in our review of the film we called it Rian Johnson's finest achievement yet. And with the movie arriving on home video this week, there is even more to dig into, including some stuff that didn't make it into the final cut.

Review: 'Any Day Now' Hectors Audiences With Good Intentions But Maudlin Melodrama

On first glance, there would be a certain “walking on eggshells” approach necessary for discussing “Any Day Now,” which is based on a tragic true story that allows the film a certain dramatic heft. “Any Day Now” touches on the rights of same-sex couples as well as treatment of the mentally disabled, and the natural approach is to address the film with kid gloves, even if these are professional actors playing dress-up-make-believe. Opinions about a film, no matter how well-spoken, tend to carry more weight than actual human compassion, even if it’s manufactured.

Director Andrew Dominik is no stranger to long first cuts. As anyone who followed the tortured post-production on the director's contemporary classic "The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford" knows, the director battled Warner Bros. over the length and tone of the movie, and numerous editors were brought in to try and cut down a film that reportedly originally ran more than three hours. Regardless, the resulting film was magnificent and Pitt remained one of the director's biggest supporters. They reteamed for "Cogan's Trade," which was recently retitled "Killing Them Softly," and it looks like the director had a lot of material to work with once again.

Tribeca Review: Despite Myriad Celebrity Cameos 'Revenge For Jolly!' Is Excruciating

Kudos to Brian Petsos, a bit actor who has pulled off an Orson Welles-level achievement in not only nabbing a brilliant cast to star in “Revenge For Jolly!” which he wrote, but also having the clout to save the lead role for himself. Welles did this with his talent, vision and status as a cinematic titan. Petsos, if we’re being charitable, most likely had to resort to blackmail, extortion and/or just plain bribery, as “Revenge For Jolly!” may be the most excruciating 80+ minutes you spend in a theater this year.

We love almost everything about The Onion's AV Club -- it's the home to some of the smartest pop culture writing around, and it's one of the first things we read of a morning. And, among its many excellent regular features, our favorite is Random Roles, which involves an actor -- usually the kind of unsung character types that we love -- running down a selection of previous parts across their careers. The latest up to bat is a prime example of the kind of performer they showcase -- the excellent Garret Dillahunt -- and as well as providing some excellent insights into his varied résumé, the actor also revealed that he's joined the ensemble casts of two of our most eagerly anticipated projects.
