So, will the romance of the open road, and a whole other America waiting in the distance in "On The Road" inspire young people everywhere to journey across this land? Or at the very least get them to read Jack Kerouac's book? That remains to be seen, but the spirit of the beats is alive in the upcoming film from Walter Salles.

For a moment there it seemed like "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper would just continually keep signing on to a bunch of stuff without ever shooting anything. Indeed, since country music movie became a big, Academy Award winning hit Cooper has put his name to plethora of projects including (take a deep breath): the western family feud saga "The Hatfields And The McCoys" with Brad Pitt attached; an adaptation of William Styron's "Lie Down In Darkness" with Jennifer Lawrence attached; an adaptation of Bob Dylan's "Brownsville Girl" also with Brad Pitt attached; a remake of the Argentinian thriller "Carancho"; former Noah Baumbach project "The Emperor's Children" and the conman tale "The Man In Rockefeller Suit." But it's a gig he took last summer that has now firmly take the pole position with a major star on board.

One of the most talked about (and controversial) developing projects of 2011 was Warner Bros. remake of the anime cult classic "Akira." The movie spent much of the year trying to find a cast, with a plethora of names -- Kristen Stewart, Gary Oldman, Ken Watanabe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Toby Kebbell, Ezra Miller, D.J. Cotrona, Logan Marshall-Green, Rami Malek, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield, James McAvoy -- being tossed around for various parts, to join the film's only confirmed actor, Garrett Hedlund. But it seems the inability to find a cast, as well as issues over the budget, may be the nail in the coffin for the film.

After some minor drama, which saw long-attached helmer Albert Hughes bail on the gestating "Akira" remake this spring, the project came back to the life in the middle of the summer when "Unknown" and "Orphan" director Jaume Collet-Serra came aboard. Things then went quiet on the project, but once again, it has come roaring back to life as Variety reports that a late February/early March 2012 production start is being eyed, and moreover, the leading man may have been found.

With filming taking place last year Montreal, New Orleans, Mexico and San Francisco, and with stills and a teaser poster for the already surfacing earlier this year, there has been a lot of guesswork about when we might see Walter Salles' highly anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On The Road." But as it turns out, he wants to get it right, and while the principal cast and crew may have wrapped things up a while ago, the director grabbed the film's star Garrett Hedlund and two took their own journey across American to snag more footage.
