Albert Hughes just can't catch a break with casting for his latest effort, "Motor City." After a lengthy search for a male lead that saw names like Chris Evans, Dominic Cooper, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeremy Renner all linked before Gerard Butler jumped on board, the project has now hit another wall, losing its villain and female lead.

In case you were wondering how Gary Oldman's career would shift and change after he finally won his first Oscar nomination, for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," the answer is: it wouldn't, really. We hope he's getting paid more, certainly. And there's talk of a return appearance from George Smiley, while the actor is starting to think about stepping behind the camera again, for the first time since 1997's "Nil By Mouth." But as for his acting roles, it seems to be the same kind of mix of villain roles (see "Leon," "The Fifth Element") and mentor roles ("The Dark Knight," "Harry Potter") that have constituted the bulk of his studio work.

It was just over a week ago when director Robert Luketic revealed that, with the hesit flick "Brilliant" starring Gerard Butler a bit further off than he thought, he was now looking at two possibilities for his next film. One was a revenge thriller with Zhang Ziyi and the other was something with Liam Hemsworth. Well, one of them is moving forward, and it has a helluva cast.

If 2011 was the year when big studios wizened up and shelved big expensive tent poles, then 2012 is the year that those same studios are cutting costs to resurrect a handful of the projects including “Wedding Crashers” helmer David Dobkin’s “Arthur & Lancelot.” While that project kicked back to life when actor Colin Farrell entered into talks with Warner Bros. to take the lead in the film, it looks as if things may become a little grim for the production all over again.

While "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" didn't bring home any Oscar gold in February, Tomas Alfredson's expertly calibrated spy thriller proved that the genre can deliver just as much thrills with dialogue, obversation and a deeply intelligent approach, than movies packed with gadgets, martinis, babes and tuxedos. The picture finally earned Gary Oldman his long overdue first Oscar nomination, and brought together an ensemble of Britain's finest acting talents the likes of which we may not ever see again.

One of the most esteemed actors of his generation, it’s truly a blunder for the Academy that until this year Gary Oldman had never even been nominated for an Oscar. During his 30 year career he’s shown extraordinary range, playing real life figures like Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald and Ludwig van Beethoven, literary icons like Rosencrantz, Dracula, Sirius Black, Lt. Jim Gordon and George Smiley and indelible cinematic creations like Drexl Spivey, Stansfield and Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg. He’s appeared in supporting parts and leading roles, indies and blockbuster franchises, he’s even stepped behind the camera to write and direct 1997’s “Nil By Mouth,” and has been kicking around a project for over a decade about a sex addict which he still hopes to get off the ground. It really seems as though there is not anything Oldman isn’t capable of.

Whether playing iconic roles, larger than life villains or smaller supporting parts the British actor can seemingly do anything. Last night the Film Society of Lincoln Center brought Oldman on stage in a career spanning conversation that discussed his process, working with directors like Mike Leigh and Christopher Nolan and even touched on his time behind the camera.
