There is a certain strain of mid-budgeted British comedy -- films like "Calendar Girls," "Made In Dagenham," "Greenfingers," "The Full Monty" etc. -- that generally tends to find an audience on both sides of the ocean, makes a modest profit, and then lands on specialty cable where it lives on in reruns forever. They all have the easily recognizable stock characters, follow a famililar arc and culminate in manufactured emotion designed to make you feel good. And while it's hard to fault a film for being exactly what it sets out to be and nothing more, there is something almost offensive about how inoffensive the template guiding "Unfinished Song" is.

Change is good and Marjane Satrapi seems to thrive on it. She broke out in 2007 with the beloved, critically acclaimed, Oscar nominated "Persepolis," but has hardly made a predictable step since. Her followup was the fantastical live action tale "Chicken With Plums" and not long after came the comic mini-feature (it ran about 75 minutes long), "The Gang Of The Jotas." Now, she's shifting gears again with "The Voices," and after nabbing Ryan Reynolds to star last fall, she's picked up two more names in what may be her most mainstream effort yet.

The actress sashayed across the screen in Stephen Frears' adaptation of the writer's "Tamara Drewe" a couple of years back, and now it looks like she's set to lead another one of Simmonds' books as it heads to the movies.

Do you want the good news first or the bad news? Let’s start with the good. Firstly, “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” is less than 90 minutes long. That’s good. Also, Gemma Arterton is really pretty and wears a lot of awesome leather pants and gloves and vests and things. Those are also good. The title sequence was neat. And, it’s not boring. It is however, unrelentingly stupid, suffering from the worst screenplay this side of “The Room.” Do not pass go, do not collect $200, proceed directly to The Playlist’s Worst Of The Year 2013 List. In the words of Gretel: “Are you fucking kidding me?”

Aside from say, "Kill List" "Haywire," to a more lesser, subjective extent "The Grey," good films are not meant to be released in January and 9.999999 times out 10 they are not. It's a dumping ground season for bad romantic comedies that have tested poorly ("Bride Wars"), lame spoof movies ("Meet the Spartans") horror-action dreck ("My Bloody Valentine 3D" and the like), wackjob oddities starring Nicolas Cage ("Season of the Witch") and whatever else needs to be released, but the studio has pretty much zero confidence in other than appealing to those that actively look at a bail-bond business rom-com starring Katherine Heigl and go, "Wow, that looks tremendous." And let's face it, January might be critical death, but it always does decent business at the box-office.

Picked up very early on by The Weinstein Company and selected as the closing entry for the Toronto International Film Festival, hopes seemed to be high for "Song For Marion." A Brit dramedy about old people and singing with cantankerous Terence Stamp in the lead? It could have been a contender, we suppose, but after failing to make any impact at all, the studio is now rushing the film out into theaters in eight weeks with a brand new title.
