Last Love
A widowed, elderly man living in Paris meets a lovely young dance instructor... what will happen next? Well, not what you're thinking. At least early on, writer/director Sandra Nettelbeck's "Last Love" is actually fairly refreshing. It's the kind of intimate drama that's becoming rarer, one that doesn't hurry to meet plot points, but instead invests time in character and setting, so that at least for a little while, the audience falls into the world of the movie like wearing an old sweater. But that mood only lasts so long and unfortunately for all of Nettelbeck's smart choices early on, she can't navigate out of them, and by time the third act arrives, the film turns harshly toward cliché, convenience and melodrama to disastrous effect.

For a while now, up and coming French actress Léa Seydoux has been threatening to make her mark internationally, even taking on small parts in Hollywood films such as "Robin Hood," "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" and "Midnight In Paris." While those roles haven't exactly garnered the attention she might have hoped for, her big break might actually come in the form of a project closer to home with Ursula Meier's "L'enfant d'en haut" ("Sister"), which is already developing strong buzz on the festival circuit.

It looks like Michael Caine is taking some time between helping out Batman in "The Dark Knight Rises" and hanging with magicians in "Now You See Me" to soak up some French culture.

A zeitgeisty role like Agent Dana Scully may cast a long shadow, but Gillian Anderson seems determined not to have the first line of her obituary read “that redheaded gal off 'The X-Files.'" Lurching in recent years between respectable British TV costume dramas and mirthless crime fare (“Straightheads” won’t be one to tell the grandkids about), Anderson is now in talks to take the most iconic role in a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “Great Expectations” as Miss Haversham, alongside eternal Cockney bruiser Ray Winstone as the novel's duplicitous Magwitch. Like everything else nowadays, though, don’t expect this to be your mother’s rainy Sunday afternoon "Great Expectations". Oh no, The Daily Mail reports that this three-part miniseries threatens to be “sexually charged”.
