Cannes Review: David Michod's 'The Rover' Starring Guy Pearce & Robert Pattinson

Having proven, with the terrific “Animal Kingdom,” that he could take a potentially small story of desperate men and blow it up into something much grander, David Michod attempts something like the opposite with “The Rover,” taking the epic, sweeping backdrop of a post-apocalyptic, dusty Australian desert, and turning in a tiny two-hander road movie, that is as spartan as its predecessor was operatic. It’s a mark of just what a talent the director is, then, that he can, on the evidence of this morning’s Cannes press screening, turn in such distinctive and compelling work in either register. Because “The Rover” which admittedly plays right into our wheelhouse, is a fascinating movie, flawed but occasionally brilliant, and it’s also not at all the film we were expecting. Bleak, brutal and unrelentingly nihilist, and with only sporadic flashes of the blackest, most mordant humor to lighten the load, it feels parched, like the story has simply boiled away in the desert heat and all that’s left are its desiccated bones. In a good way.

The Rover
Already one of our 15 Most Anticipated Films Of The 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the good news is that unlike many films unspooling on the Croisette, we won't have to wait too long to see "The Rover" in theatres at home. Arriving just in time to provide a smart summer antidote to the variety of big screen blockbusters on display, David Michod's latest promises a unique sun-cooked thriller, and today we have the exclusive look at the U.S. theatrical poster for the film.

The Rover
"I met Rob once before I even knew I was going to film 'The Rover.' He is among the 400,000 people I met in Los Angeles when 'Animal Kingdom' came out there. (Laughing) I knew nothing about him, I hadn’t seen the Twilight movie – Still haven’t seen them, by the way. However, some of my friends had told me he was an interesting guy," director Robert Michod told Premiere magazine (via Robert Pattinson 360).

The Rover
Fear The Man With Nothing Left To Lose. So goes the tagline of David Michod's "The Rover" starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and with the film now headed to Cannes, A24 has dropped a new trailer and a couple of posters for the thriller. And yes, it looks pretty damn good.

Review: Reserved & Quiet 'Hateship Loveship' Starring Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Nick Nolte & Hailee Steinfeld

Hateship, Loveship
Following the smash success of "Bridesmaids," Kristen Wiig has actively subverted the obvious expectations of the career choices that would follow a hit film. The actress has largely gravitated toward small-scale projects ("Girl Most Likely," "Friends With Kids"), in roles that still fit within her wheelhouse, but also allow an opportunity for Wiig to exercise the kind of acting chops that more mainstream fare doesn't afford very often. But "Hateship Loveship" is Wiig's most atypical role and turn to date, leading an ensemble cast in a drama about a family adrift in the wake of death, and the one woman who manages to keep them from completely splitting apart.

Breathe In, Felicity Jones
Intimate, expressive, agonizing and beautifully rendered, director Drake Doremus' third feature-length effort, "Breathe In," will be familiar to those that know the indie filmmaker's small, but already distinctive oeuvre. While similar in tone and style, his latest effort is like the darker cousin to Dormeus' wistful relationship drama "Like Crazy," possessing an intensity and tension that's emotionally bruising.

Breathe In
Last year at the Sundance Film Festival, we noted that Drake Doremus' "Breathe In" was "one of the most emotionally poignant and heartbreaking movies" that screened in Park City. And if the film starring Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones and Amy Ryan may have fallen off your radar, be prepared to put it back on because it's not headed to theaters and it's one you'll want to make room for.

We're only three actors in, and "Black Mass" is already serving up an abundance of dudes we really like. When he's not falling over backwards into Helena Bonham Carter's closet for costumes, Johnny Depp does some of his most fascinating work, while Joel Edgerton usually owns whatever he's in. And with the pair already signed up for the gangster pic "Black Mass," they're letting one more major talent into their midst.

Hateship, Loveship
While Kristen Wiig has done her share of logical post-"Bridesmaids" roles in films like "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" and "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," she has also used the opportunities presented by the hit comedy to try and stretch her acting wings. And she dials it way down for "Hateship Loveship," a romantic drama which finds her sharing the screen with Guy Pearce, Nick Nolte and Hailee Steinfeld.

The Rover
Four, far too long years have passed since David Michôd shook up the cinematic world with his nerve jangling gangland drama "Animal Kingdom," but it looks the wait has been worth it. The director is back with "The Rover," and judging by the first teaser trailer, he'll once again be putting you on the edge of your seat.
