Hateship, Loveship
Do you remember the film "Return" starring Linda Cardellini, directed by Liza Johnson? No? Well, with TIFF around the corner now might be a good time to catch up with indie movie — a solid, modest portrait of one woman breaking down— as Johnson is moving on to bigger things with "Hateship, Friendship." It's headed to Toronto and the first images from the effort are here.

Let's say when you were younger you played in a rock 'n roll band that was modestly successfully, but that life was traded in for a stable job, marriage, children and life in the suburbs. Would you want to revisit that old spark of youth, or is the enriching life of family enough to make up for that gap? That's one of the central questions in "Breathe In," the new drama from "Like Crazy" writer/director Drake Doremus. And another new peek at the movie has arrived.

Breathe In, Felicity Jones
Desire can be a dangerous thing, and when mixed with feelings that your life is stuck in a rut, it can explode into something unexpectedly potent. And it's this idea that rides at the core of "Breathe In," the new drama from "Like Crazy" writer/director Drake Doremus. The movie is getting ready to roll into U.K. cinemas and a clip has arrived offering a peek at the simmering relationship between music teacher and married man Keith (Guy Pearce) and exchange student Sophie (Felicity Jones).

The pain of love and the strains of fidelity seem to be recurring themes in the burgeoning career of filmmaker Drake Doremus. He burst onto the scene with the long distance romancer "Like Crazy," turned an Intel/Toshiba promo opportunity into the web series "The Beauty Inside" (watch it here) and now returns to the bruising pangs of love with "Breathe In." And the first trailer is here to provide a window into what he's conjured for his latest.

Best/worst Iron Man 3 feature
If you were in prison, comatose or pinned to the ground by a fallen armoire this weekend, it's possible you didn't see "Iron Man 3." All the rest of us, it seems, ignored our mothers' protestations and spent a couple of hours of this fine sunny summer weekend indoors in the dark, watching Robert Downey Jr. suit up as Tony Stark/Iron Man for his third solo outing. In fact, judging by these numbers, so did Mom. The "Iron Man" threequel (read about some others here) is already in the history books as the second biggest domestic opening of all time, right behind sister film "The Avengers," and looks on track to be another billion-dollar movie for the unprecedentedly successful Marvel Universe project. But with Shane Black a new recruit for the director's chair (Iron Throne?) and expectations vertiginously high for the launch of Phase Two, the finished film could be expected to show at least a few stretch marks. Our early review is here and since then, many of The Playlist have managed to catch up with it, so here's what we thought worked and what did not. **Spoilers abound.**

Review: 'Iron Man 3' Is A Solid, Sometimes Surprising Start To Marvel's Phase Two Movies

Iron Man 3, poster header
After just about as successful a start as you could ask for (three new franchises, and one mega-franchise that kicked off with the third biggest movie of all time), the Marvel movie machine is moving into its next phase. And with it comes the risk of dilution; we're getting at least two movies a year (plus TV series "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D"), and with countless other superheroes also in the marketplace, there's a chance that diminishing returns could set in; what was once a special chance to see much-loved characters on the big screen might simply become a bi-annual check in to see much of what we've seen before.

...because there is a marketing budget to spend, that's why. That's the answer to your question as to why Marvel keeps pumping out material for "Iron Man 3," which pretty much everyone on the planet Earth knows by now is coming out in a few short weeks. But there are still some treats to be had inside the blitzkrieg of advertising.

We gotta admit, we sort of forgot this one was happening, but we have to say, we're glad it is. It's coming on three years since David Michod made his mark with "Animal Kingdom," and now he's back with a thriller that goes to the great outdoors.

After counting it down for the past few days, Marvel has finally lifted the curtain on the new trailer for "Iron Man 3," so strap in and get ready for the ride. And you know what? You probably won't be shocked to learn that this likely won't be Robert Downey Jr.'s or Tony Stark's last ride at the superhero rodeo.

The marketing machine (or should that be the Stark-eting machine?...no? Sorry...) behind “Iron Man 3” is now working at full capacity so expect to be bombarded with little bits and pieces from the Marvel three-quel between now and its April/May release date (and a new trailer next week, fyi). Disney will have high expectations for Shane Black’s take on Tony Stark, and its performance should give us a good gauge of just how much of a boost the $1.5 billion-grossing “The Avengers” will give each of the standalone Marvel movies. With the first two "Iron Man" movies grossing $585 million and $624 million respectively, there’s still the slim possibility that Marvel could have another billion dollar hit on their hands this summer.
