The anticipation for John Hillcoat's "Lawless" -- formerly known as "The Wettest County In The World" and then just "The Wettest County" -- has been nearly unbearable. Going through a few release date shifts, and the aforementioned title change, fans eager for the film got a great boost of good news when it was announced last week that the film landed a coveted In Competition slot at the Cannes Film Festival. What at first seemed like The Weinstein Company moving around and tinkering with a movie they didn't know what to do with, instead looks like the studio positioning the film for the best rollout possible.

It seems Guy Pearce is liking this whole blockbuster thing. While "Lockout" didn't quite make waves at the box office (okay, it barely made a splash) it was clear he had a ball of a time as the wisecracking lead, but now he's joining an established franchise in a role that won't be as showy, but will be crucial.

Audiences have a strong awareness of Guy Pearce, but are they ready to see him as an action hero? In “Lockout,” Pearce plays disgraced special agent Snow, forced on a suicide mission to rescue the President’s daughter from a riot happening outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, in the middle of a dangerous space prison. But while Pearce’s wisecracking Snow gives and receives his share of punches, the actor wasn’t entirely certain at first that this would be an action-heavy role.

In the futurist world of "Lockout," most deadly convicts will be confined to MS-One, a maximum security prison floating in outer space. It’s not long from now (2079, to be exact) strongly suggesting the cultural shift in our society’s interest in interstellar exploration has gone from possibly exploring other planets to merely depositing our human detritus into the galaxy’s gaping maw. It’s a good thing most of these cryosleeping convicts are deranged, irredeemable nutcases, right?

We’ve long passed the point where Luc Besson’s name attached to a thriller could get us excited, and we suspect that “Lockout” won’t be the film that causes us to reconsider that particular standpoint. Starring Guy Pearce as a wrongly accused convict, and Maggie Grace as the President’s daughter who gets kidnapped (AGAIN!!!), Pearce must free Grace from a futuristic space prison that has been overrun by the inmates if he is to clear his name.

This is a slight paraphrasing of the truth. A couple of years ago, an eccentric award-winning actor had a choice: He could star in an unreasonable amount of movies of declining quality, stockpiling paychecks as his reputation and brand diminished. Or he could sell his dinosaurs bones and castles to appease the IRS and become significantly less weird. Well, here's to Nicolas Cage for keeping it weirder than ever, movies be damned.

With all the talk of the rumors and news about the "Blade Runner" sequel/prequel/whatever and Ridley Scott's Cormac McCarthy penned "The Counselor" we kind of forgot about "Prometheus." But Fox didn't and just to remind you this film is still coming, a new viral clip of sorts has arrived.

If Osama Bin Laden weren't already dead, we might fear for his safety purely based on the strength of the cast Kathryn Bigelow is assembling for her (still untitled) "Kill Bin Laden" flick. Oscar winner Mark Boal ("The Hurt Locker") wrote the script and Joel Edgerton and Jessica Chastain will head a cast that also includes Mark Strong (as a good guy this time...surely?), Jason Clarke, Edgar Ramirez, Kyle Chandler and Chris Pratt. And now the production has added two more to bolster that cast.

Among the five Best Actor nominees at this Sunday's Academy Awards, there's one person who should have been sitting in the Kodak Theater long ago: at long last, Gary Oldman, one of the actors whose lack of awards recognition has long been lamented by the chattering film classes, gets to book a tuxedo and a limo, and call himself an Oscar nominee, thanks to his superb, understated performance as George Smiley in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy."

Nicolas Cage is about this far away from being an exclusively direct-to-video actor.
