Best/worst Iron Man 3 feature
If you were in prison, comatose or pinned to the ground by a fallen armoire this weekend, it's possible you didn't see "Iron Man 3." All the rest of us, it seems, ignored our mothers' protestations and spent a couple of hours of this fine sunny summer weekend indoors in the dark, watching Robert Downey Jr. suit up as Tony Stark/Iron Man for his third solo outing. In fact, judging by these numbers, so did Mom. The "Iron Man" threequel (read about some others here) is already in the history books as the second biggest domestic opening of all time, right behind sister film "The Avengers," and looks on track to be another billion-dollar movie for the unprecedentedly successful Marvel Universe project. But with Shane Black a new recruit for the director's chair (Iron Throne?) and expectations vertiginously high for the launch of Phase Two, the finished film could be expected to show at least a few stretch marks. Our early review is here and since then, many of The Playlist have managed to catch up with it, so here's what we thought worked and what did not. **Spoilers abound.**

Iron Man 3
While the speculation has already started on the status of "Iron Man 4" a week before "Iron Man 3" even opens stateside, let's put our focus back on the third film for a moment. As our review states, it's a solid film, but what fans really need to know is that despite Marvel's proliferation of marketing, there are some truly big surprises that haven't even been hinted at. So don't worry, this isn't a movie that's been given away before it's been released (though now that it has open internationally, you might want to stay off message boards unless you want it spoiled).

Iron Man 3, Gwyneth Paltrow
So just how mega big is "Iron Man 3" going to be? Well, if early projections are accurate, it's going to be a monster, with predictions of a $160 million weekend now being tossed around. That would not only make it the biggest opener of the franchise so far, but one of the year's biggest movies as well. So you might think it would be a no brainer for Marvel to greenlight a fourth installment. Guess again?

After just about as successful a start as you could ask for (three new franchises, and one mega-franchise that kicked off with the third biggest movie of all time), the Marvel movie machine is moving into its next phase. And with it comes the risk of dilution; we're getting at least two movies a year (plus TV series "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D"), and with countless other superheroes also in the marketplace, there's a chance that diminishing returns could set in; what was once a special chance to see much-loved characters on the big screen might simply become a bi-annual check in to see much of what we've seen before.

...because there is a marketing budget to spend, that's why. That's the answer to your question as to why Marvel keeps pumping out material for "Iron Man 3," which pretty much everyone on the planet Earth knows by now is coming out in a few short weeks. But there are still some treats to be had inside the blitzkrieg of advertising.

Marvel Studios are usually pretty tight-lipped about spoilers in their movies, but recently they've been lifting the veil. Some fans complained recently that Marvel Chief Kevin Feige was revealing too many spoilers, but apparently the honcho said, these media reveals are not spoilers but "bonuses" (now that's a fun spin). Well, if you want to know some of the goods about "Iron Man 3," come on down, but if you'd rather go in blind, beware, spoiler abound.

The marketing machine (or should that be the Stark-eting machine?...no? Sorry...) behind “Iron Man 3” is now working at full capacity so expect to be bombarded with little bits and pieces from the Marvel three-quel between now and its April/May release date (and a new trailer next week, fyi). Disney will have high expectations for Shane Black’s take on Tony Stark, and its performance should give us a good gauge of just how much of a boost the $1.5 billion-grossing “The Avengers” will give each of the standalone Marvel movies. With the first two "Iron Man" movies grossing $585 million and $624 million respectively, there’s still the slim possibility that Marvel could have another billion dollar hit on their hands this summer.

We have to admit that if anyone had told us that Pepper Potts would serve as the emotional lynchpin in the "Iron Man" movies before they came out, we wouldn't have believed them. However, thanks to some great chemistry between Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr., and decent writing to go along with it, the pair serve as the best and most fleshed out relationship of any of the Marvel movies. And once again, in the series' third installment, their union is being put to the test.

So you spend millions and million of dollars on a Super Bowl spot, only to have every other rival studio drop their ads right at the same time. Smart marketing? We'll let the accountants sort it out, but Marvel is hoping to transform jocks into nerds with this Super Bowl spot.
