Harrison Ford Allegedly In Talks To Play Deckard Again In Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' Follow-Up

One of the bigger news stories of last year was the report that, on the back of his sort-of-return to the "Alien" franchise for "Prometheus," which is set in the same universe, Ridley Scott was planning to go back to his other sci-fi classic, attaching himself to a new "Blade Runner" film, after Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to the series. But it was unclear for some time what form the film would take; a direct sequel? A prequel? Or, like "Prometheus," a mostly original project riffing on the same world and concepts?

Well, look who's all grown up! Abigail Breslin who first sauntered into our hearts as the pudgy Olive in "Little Miss Sunshine," and who recently flashed her bra in "New Year's Eve" is now ready to graduate into her first bonafide blockbuster movie.

Oh, Harrison Ford. As we documented in our Essentials feature in the summer, it's a long time since the actor, once one of the most reliable stars in Hollywood, has been on form. And it seems that every potential comeback, from "Hollywood Homicide" and "Crossing Over" to last year's "Morning Glory" and this year's "Cowboys & Aliens" has fallen short, even when, as in the last two cases, the actor's seemed to made more of an effort not to sleepwalk through the picture.

We guess Jack Nicholson was busy. He was the last actor named as a contender for the key role of Branch Rickey in the developing Jackie Robinson biopic "42," but it looks like another aging superstar may step up to the plate.

So is Harrison Ford a gift or a curse these days? The actor hasn't had a hit film -- that didn't involve carrying a whip once again -- in over a decade. You'd have to go all the way back to 2000's "What Lies Beneath." Since then it's been a string of underperforming and just plain bad films in almost every genre imaginable, from heartwarming drama ("Extraordinary Measures"), genre thrillers ("Firewall"), comedy ("Morning Glory") and blockbuster tentpoles ("Cowboys & Aliens"). But that said, he is Indiana Jones and Han Solo, so that will always carry a certain amount of weight.

We realize that you may be suffering from a little Nicolas Winding Refn fatigue from all the coverage we've been doing on the director and his fantastic new film, "Drive," but the filmmaker and star Ryan Gosling have been on a major press tour for the film pretty much since its Cannes debut. One of the hopefully final stops for the Danish director was at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) a few nights ago for a sneak preview of his latest, and we were on hand for the Q&A. Refn kept the Brooklyn audience rapt in attention as he told a few now-familiar tales about how the film came together and his first prescription drug-fueled meeting with Gosling. He also shared a little more info on a now-dead project called "The Dying of the Light" by "Taxi Driver" scribe Paul Schrader. The film centered on a C.I.A. agent who starts to become afflicted with blindness and Harrison Ford was attached to the lead.

Update: Producers for the film tell 24 Frames that realistically, the earliest this will shoot is 2013 as a writer still needs to be hired, a script to be written and a film to cast -- a process which will take 18 months at least. And oh yeah, don't expect Harrison Ford. "In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott," producer Andrew Kosove said. "But if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."

For a time in the 1980s and 1990s, Harrison Ford was untouchable, and basically the biggest movie star in the world. He'd cropped up in bits and pieces in the 1970s (most notably small roles in "American Graffiti" and "The Conversation,") but Han Solo turned him into an instant matinee screen idol: he was the beating human heart in George Lucas' "Star Wars," cynical and vulnerable at once, the figure that made all the cosmic silliness fly with audiences, and appropriately became the franchise's biggest break-out star. Only a few years later, lightning struck again, when he was made the last minute replacement for Tom Selleck in Lucas and Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," a hall-of-fame action-adventure that would spawn three sequels.

So, "Super 8" was pretty good, huh? With a couple of exceptions among The Playlist team (including this one, who hasn't seen it yet), it's getting very positive reactions, and from the looks of it better-than-expected box office, it's carrying over with general audiences as well, marking an almost unprecedented two blockbusters in a row that turned out to be decent. But is the competition going to sit back and let J.J. Abrams be feted as the king of the summer blockbuster season? Don't count on it.
