Summit Already Planning 'Red 3' Before 'Red 2' Even Opens, Because Old People With Guns Is Always Funny

While the sequel to "Red," the 2010 action comedy that starred Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman as over-the-hill assassins, doesn't open until the middle of July, Lionsgate and producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are already plotting a third film, with screenwriting siblings Jon and Erich Hoeber back for a third go-around (according to the Hollywood Reporter). "Thank god!" said nobody.

When Disney and Pixar announced that they were attempting a "Monsters Inc." prequel that would show us what our beloved heroes Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) were like in college, it was hard to muster much enthusiasm. After all, much of the charm of the first film lay in the fact that it was a workplace comedy, and the workers just happened to be monsters who scared human children for a living. Seeing them in college not only seemed regressive but, if it didn't succeed, could sully (ha) the sweetness of the original. But little by little as we've seen more and more of "Monsters University," the more excited we've become. With a release of the final trailer, our excitement has been solidified. This looks scary good.

Someone raised an interesting but kind of depressing point about Pixar recently. Between 1995 and 2009, the peerless animation company produced ten movies, with just one of those being sequel – 1999’s “Toy Story 2.” If all goes as expected, between 2010 and 2015 four of the company’s seven features will have been sequels, the third of which, “Monsters University” (a prequel, technically, but you catch our drift) is set for release in just over two months time.

Thought the awards season was long done? Not quite. Last night saw the 18th annual Jameson Empire Awards, presented annually by the UK film magazine, the biggest in the world, and one of the largest such ceremonies to have their winners voted for by the public. This year, there's been a big push for more recognition for the ceremony, with probably the starriest and glitziest evening in recent memory, and we were there last night to see the winners revealed.

Review: 'Phil Spector' Killed Lana Clarkson, But David Mamet's Movie Presupposes, Maybe He Didn't?

With production on the film starting all the way back in the summer of 2011, it's been a curiously long wait for David Mamet's "Phil Spector," and from the first moment, one gets the impression that HBO's lawyers were a bit nervous about the effort. Before we even see one frame of the picture, an opening title card insists: "This is a work of fiction. It's not 'based on a true story.' It is a drama inspired by actual persons in a trial, but it is neither an attempt to depict the actual persons, nor to comment upon the trial or its outcome." But frankly, it's a little hard to swallow, particular since the director himself has been quite clear about what he thinks about Spector's fate regarding the murder of Lana Clarkson.

Just when you thought you couldn’t get any more excited about HBO’s upcoming slate of original programming, we now have a teaser for David Mamet’s “Phil Spector.” The TV movie starring Al Pacino as Phil Spector and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney is just two months away from its television premiere. While HBO doesn’t really give us much to go by, the very idea of a Pacino-Mirren-Mamet team up on the small screen should be exciting in itself.

Judging in terms of pure profitability, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” has to be considered one of the biggest hits of the year. Off a meager $10 million budget it has gone on to gross over $46 million domestically and $134 million worldwide – and that’s before considering that it could go on to pocket a whole lot more from its home video release should it nab some of the Oscar nominations that it’s currently being talked up for.
