Review: 'Amelie' Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Oppressively Whimsical 'T.S. Spivet' Starring Helena Bonham Carter

The Young & Prodigious Spivet
The last time Jean-Pierre Jeunet made a film in English, it didn't work out so well. Hot off cult hits "Delicatessen" and "The City Of Lost Children" (co-directed with Marc Caro), Jeunet was picked by 20th Century Fox to helm "Alien: Resurrection," the fourth film in one of the most important franchises. The result was the worst entry in the series, one admittedly hampered by studio interference, but also one that seemed to prove a uniquely poor match to Jeunet's particular skillset.

The Young & Prodigious Spivet
Avid filmgoers likely have a handle already on what emotions director Jean-Pierre Jeunet stirs up, as over distinctive efforts like “Amelie," “The City of Lost Children," and “Delicatessen” he’s fashioned a completely unique perspective that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But Jeunet’s latest work, “The Young And Prodigious T.S. Spivet," strays into new territory—being entirely family friendly and in 3D for a start—and close to the film’s German premiere and UK release we’ve got a new clip to share.

Suffragette
With post-production now underway, and the filming having taken place early this winter, the question is whether or not we'll see "Suffragette" completed in time for the fall festival circuit or if it'll be held for next year. Those decisions are likely being made right now, but until we know more, the first image from the movie has arrived to give a hint at what's coming.

So, here's a news update about a Black List script and two sequels, which seems to be an accurate ratio of what kind of movies are made in Hollywood. So let's just get right to it.

So why do celebrities like endorsing products? Well, Page Six's recent report is fairly instructive, as they reveal that Matt Damon got paid $150,000/second, or $3 million, for twenty seconds of work to feature in a new Nespresso spot with his good pal George Clooney.

The Lone Ranger, Helena Bonham Carter
One of the more infamous Hollywood stories this year was the inglorious demise of "The Lone Ranger," Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's $200 million+ western that failed to connect with audiences and was outright scalped by critics (sorry, we couldn't resist). While chatting with "The Lone Ranger" costar Helena Bonham Carter at this year's Hamptons International Film Festival for her new biopic "Burton & Taylor," we couldn't help but bring up the response to the film and what she thought it's chances were of a life beyond this initial reception. Carter responded by comparing the film to another of her movies that was judged harshly upon release but blossomed lovingly into a bona-fide cult classic years later, David Fincher's "Fight Club."

Gotta admit, we sort of totally forgot about this movie entirely. After playing TIFF to rather muted notice last fall, and being released all over the place elsewhere in the world, Mike Newell's "Great Expectations" is finally seeing release in stateside theaters. And well, it's certainly very costume drama-esque as you might expect.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are screen icons of apparently imperishable importance and fascination, and so the screen keeps coming back to them, making Elizabeth Taylor the only person in history (so far, but we imagine it will stay this way) to be portrayed by both Lindsay Lohan and Helena Bonham-Carter. Lohan's “Liz & Dick” has thankfully been and gone, but behold, a clip from the BBC's upcoming “Burton & Taylor,” following on from the recent trailer.

You would think that legends like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton deserve better treatment that kind of cheap, cranked out TV biopics, but we guess not. They aren't superheroes.... Last fall, we saw Lindsay Lohan and That Other Guy do their thing in the roundly derided Lifetime effort "Liz & Dick." Now the Brits are having a go at it with "Burton & Taylor" but at least they're bringing some classier people along for the ride.
