Jessica Chastain may seem like she can do it all, but there's one project it looks like she just can't squeeze in. Attached as recently as this spring to "The Secret Scripture," Cineuropa now reports that Rooney Mara is the young female lead opposite Vanessa Redgrave in the film.

The Homesman
Eight years ago (gosh, was it really that long?), Tommy Lee Jones made his long-awaited feature directorial debut with the contemporary neo-western “The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada.” The film premiered at Cannes, and proved a big hit there, winning a Best Actor trophy for Jones, and a Best Screenplay prize for “Babel” scribe Guillermo Arriaga. But the film never quite found an audience outside the Croisette, and perhaps for that reason, the only thing that Jones has made in the meantime was a modest HBO adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Sunset Limited.”

The Homesman
Even with two Oscars above her fireplace, it has been a long time since Hilary Swank appeared in anything Academy Award worthy, or even Cannes Film Festival worthy. But that's about to change with her lead role in "The Homesman," the sophomore feature film from actor/director Tommy Lee Jones. This is one we're already anticipating on the Croisette, and a clip is here to show off the deft blend of tones Jones is bringing to his latest effort.

"Did you know, that if you take every single person killed in a terrorist act around the world in the last twenty years, and you add to that all the lives lost in the Middle East since 1967 -- the 6 Day War -- and you add to that every single American life lost in Vietnam, in Korea, and in every single American engagement since then -- Iraq, Afghanistan... If you take all those lives and you multiply by two, that's the number of children that die of malaria every single year," James Woods gravely intones in "Mary and Martha." That this audience educating factoid comes during one of the climactic moments of the movie should tell you everything you need to know about the intentions and storytelling choices in this sentimental, misjudged, one-note clunker, that's yet another wide misstep by two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank.

Oh hey, Hilary Swank, remember her? The two-time Oscar winner, who hasn't really made a decent movie since "Million Dollar Baby" (though if we're being charitable, "Conviction" wasn't awful, just forgettable -- bet you didn't even remember that one) heads to HBO for her next effort, which looks like a definite improvement over her last few movies.

Last week brought the borderline-absurd news that Nicolas Cage was in talks to star in a new take on the god-bothering "Left Behind" franchise (this is a WTF even for Cage). This week brings the first major movie starring another Oscar-winner, Halle Berry, in five years, in the shape of "Cloud Atlas," as well as the barely-noticeable release of Gerard Butler vehicle "Chasing Mavericks." These things mean many things, but perhaps first and foremost among them, it's that certain actors aren't having the best of times.

To get interesting stories made in today's climate, yes you need financing and all the necessary little wheels in motion, but sometimes you just need someone to take an interest and push things forward. And that's just what Matthew McConaughey has done with "The Dallas Buyer's Club." While he's been attached to the film since the spring of 2011, earlier this year he put aside a potential role in Lee Daniels' "The Butler" to really focus on the movie and get it rolling. And now it looks like the fall start date is fast approaching, with casting beginning to gear up, even as one actor drops out.

After a whirlwind decade for Hilary Swank, which included winning Oscars for lead roles in both “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby,” things have slowed down recently for the actress – with only a couple films like 2010’s “Conviction” and a bit role in “New Years Eve” standing out recently. But Swank seems to be making her way back to the screen in a big way, with a Phillip Noyce-helmed HBO TV movie entitled “Mary & Martha” in the pipeline, a part alongside Meryl Streep in Tommy Lee Jones' "The Homesman," and now she’s lining up yet another feature.
