Is it any surprise that one of the biggest franchises on the planet is engaging some of the biggest stars in Hollywood? Ever since the Disney/Lucasfilm deal went down and J.J. Abrams started work on "Star Wars: Episode 7," there have been no shortage of names rumored for the project. Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, Alex Pettyfer, Saoirse Ronan, Sullivan Stapleton and, most recently, Jesse Plemons have all been said to be eyed or have read or been considered. But before all of them, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were reported to be returning to reprise their turns as Luke, Han and Leia. And it seems they will be a crucial part of the new trilogy.

Actress Nicole Kidman has the luxury of a strategist's approach to her film career, laying out several projects at any one time to consider the most appealing move. Going from the gonzo melodrama of “Stoker” to the regal beauty coming soon in “Queen of Monaco,” she's certainly after a great deal of variety lately, but seeing the recent slate of white-knuckle thrillers including “Captain Philips,” “Gravity,” and “All Is Lost” hit the screen, it seems for her next film she's looking to step into similarly distressing waters.

While fans of Peter Jackson's original "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy eagerly eat up the extended editions on home video, which offered up lots more Middle Earth, did anyone walk out of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" saying, "I hope there's even more of that!" Okay, there are the super diehard fans who cry and shake at anything from the Tolkien universe, but it's likely safe to say that 'Unexpected' didn't quite capture the same pop culture buzz as 'LOTR' before it. Nevertheless, the marketing must continue.

For those of you who have been reading us for a while, you might remember that way back in the day, we did a two part feature on omnibus films, and basically it boils down to this: by their very nature, with numerous directors and actors taking part, it's very rare for these kinds of movies to work as a whole. Some segments will be great, while others will miss the mark, but the ambition is always admirable. Which is why we're keeping an eye on "The Turning," a movie we nearly forgot about.

Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer will star in the Michael Radford-helmed English-language remake of “Elsa & Fred.” Based on the 2005 Argentinian film, the remake will move its setting to New Orleans with “MacLaine as Elsa, a gregarious fun-loving retiree, who takes a shine to Plummer’s character, a stick-in-the-mud widower, Fred, who moves into her apartment building, but just wants to be left alone.” The film begins shooting this December in New Orleans and Rome.

Bitching about the vapidity of tentpoles it the new black. "The Dark Knight Rises" cinematographer Wally Pfister recently disparaged the shooting clumsiness of "The Avengers" in a new interview, Paul Bettany admitted that he's never bothered to watch any of the "Iron Man" movies he's in (he plays the robot voice of Tony Stark's digital butler Jarvis) and finally, Australian actor Hugo Weaving recently said he's not very keen on returning to Marvel's "Captain America" franchise (he plays the Red Skull villain).

You might have heard a minor geek uproar over the interwebs yesterday. It seems someone has dared to say that if they had a choice, they'd prefer not to feature in any more Marvel movies. And that man is Hugo Weaving.

Hugo Weaving continues to switch up big blockbusters and smaller minded fare, and this time he's headed to Australia to star in "Mystery Road" alongside "True Blood" hunk Ryan Kwanten, Jack Thompson, Tony Barry, Tasma Walton, Damian Walshe-Howling, David Field, Trisha Whitton and Siobhan Binge. Written and directed by Ivan Sen ("Toomelah"), the picture will tell the story of an indigenous detective who returns home to find out who killed an indigenous girl. Kwanten will play a pig hunter while Thompson takes the role of an out to pasture pastoralist. Filming is already underway and Aussie distribution is locked up, but if you're an international buyer, give Arclight Films a ring.
