Despite his near omnipresence in the media, and the countless projects that he's attached to, we actually haven't seen a directorial effort from Guillermo Del Toro since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Yes, it's been that long, but not for lack of trying. Del Toro has faced a double whammy of disappointment over the last years, stepping away from directing "The Hobbit" films as they became continually delayed thanks to MGM's financial woes, and seeing his R-rated "At The Mountains Of Madness" get shelved by Universal. But there been no stopping Del Toro's "Pacific Rim," with the film currently in the midst of production, and while specifics are being kept under wraps, we now have our first look at the film.

Over thirty years after the 'space jockey' first appeared in "Alien," and after a couple of months of speculation and rumor, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," his return to sci-fi for the first time since "Blade Runner", and his continuation/prequel/spin-off/whatever to his 1979 space horror classic, finally hits theaters today. It's one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, and is already inspiring fierce debate (The Playlist team are split down the middle on the project, with wildly divided reactions from those who've seen it).

Ambition is a rare thing in movies these days, especially when it comes to summer blockbuster fare. There might be ambitions to blow up bigger things, or include more bad guys, or feature more stars, but in terms of real ambition -- telling big stories, about big subjects, on a huge canvas -- only a handful of filmmakers are really playing ball. Far more so than its predecessor "Alien," which is, after all, pretty much a haunted house designed to scare the living hell out of you, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" has big ambitions. It wants to ask the big questions -- where do we come from? Why are we here? -- while also serving as a 3D, CGI-filled thrill ride.

" 'Prometheus' originated from a very simple question that haunted me after the first 'Alien,' and no one answered in subsequent 'Alien' films: who was the Space Jockey—the big guy in the seat? We didn’t know if it was going to be a sequel or a prequel. I think you might not even argue it’s a prequel because it moves so far away from the original," Ridley Scott recently wrote in Newsweek, adding another puzzle piece to the movie. And as the continuing promotional train for "Prometheus" keeps chugging along, we're seeing more and more of what this not-a-prequel-exactly will be offering.

In case you haven't figured it out by this point, the Fox marketing department's tactic for promoting "Prometheus" is essentially a winner-takes-all, carpet bomb campaign that will crush you with pics, clips, teasers and God knows what else, until you don't even want to see the movie anymore. Okay, who are we kidding, you'll still want to see this, but we kind of just wish we could fast-forward the clock already.

Well, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" is just looming over the horizon and there is no movie this summer -- or hell, this year -- that is matching the anticipation felt for this quasi-"Alien" prequel. And though actual details on the plot and where this story will go has been kept mostly close to the chest, there has been a generous serving of images and video from the film, and a few more pics have arrived as you head into your weekend.

So, while we wait to see if crazy Alex Jones is right about Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" being a secret revelation of the Illuminati or just a really good sci-fi flick, a batch of sex-tacular new stills have popped up at Russian site Kino Gallery.

Batman and "The Dark Knight" aside, D.C. Comics haven't had much joy on the big screen, last year's "Green Lantern" being only the latest in a series of misfires, although they're hopeful that next year's "Man of Steel" will revive Superman. We say revive, but actually the superpowered Kryptonian only last year wrapped up a popular ten-year run with the TV series "Smallville."

Of all the summer movies due this year, none, even "The Dark Knight Rises," carry the weight of expectations from cinephiles as "Prometheus." Given that it's the first science-fiction movie in thirty years from Ridley Scott, the man whose previous entries in the genre, "Alien" and "Blade Runner," stand at the very apex. And as a spiritual successor set in the same universe as the former, the stakes for geeks are even higher.
