While the film might not be quite as sweet and heady as drinking a glass of lilac wine, Penn Badgley's performance in "Greetings From Tim Buckley" does justice to the late Jeff Buckley, while also revealing that the "Gossip Girl" star has quite a few more talents than he's thus far been given credit for. But his swoop of wild hair and impressive vocal theatrics aside, the rest of the movie around him tells a trio of stories that never quite unite to land the emotional connection they're aiming for.

Anna Frield and Steve Coogan in THE LOOK OF LOVE
Marking the fourth collaboration between director Michael Winterbottom and actor Steve Coogan, "The Look of Love" is based on the true story of porn baron Paul Raymond. Raymond amassed over $1 billion through purchasing prime real estate in London's Soho, becoming Britain's richest man and earning the title "The King of Soho." Anna Friel plays his wife Jean, who posed for some of Raymond's porno shoots and ultimately received a record divorce-settlement. Their daughter is played by charming and soon-to-be everywhere Imogen Poots. You can peak in at the couple's relationship in the clip below.

So, how hard is it to make a Jeff Buckley movie if you don't have official access to his songs or life story? Apparently, not that hard. While "Mystery White Boy" continues to marinate, "Greetings From Tim Buckley" has cast, shot, played a major festival and is now getting ready for release. And you know what, it's not as much like Jackie Jormp-Jomp as you might think. Good luck to whoever gets cast as Jeff Buckley in the next movie, because Penn Badgley -- uneven as the movie turns out -- is actually pretty good.

Tamsin Egerton in THE LOOK OF LOVE
So, with Steven Soderbergh stepping away from film sets to pursue other endeavors, whose going to replace him as the cinematic chameleon to follow? Well, how about Michael Winterbottom? In the past few years the Brit helmer has gone from scuzzy noir "The Killer Inside Me" to comedic road trip series "The Trip" to an India-set Thomas Hardy adaptation "Trishna" to an intimate character study with "Everyday." And now, his latest is a biopic on smut king and real estate baron Paul Raymond. Like we said, the guy doesn't like to repeat himself.

While stylishly capturing the verve, exotica, and free-spirited mojo of swinging '60s London, uber-prolific English director Michael Winterbottom's portrait of legendary U.K. smut impresario Paul Raymond is otherwise a shallow misfire.

Review: 'A Late Quartet' Is A Soap Opera Symphony That Hits All The Wrong Notes

Certainly, if a film pulls together a cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffmam, Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener, there's going to be something worth enjoying. And indeed, the trio give top shelf performances as we've always come to expect from them in "A Late Quartet." But it's just too bad that they're in service of Yaron Zilberman's film, which takes the unique focus of a string quartet in Manhattan and puts it in the middle of a standard and unsatisfying soap opera that spins off into one subplot too many.

As any reader of the site knows, we're big fans of Imogen Poots, and we'll just go ahead and say that she's the secret weapon of both the upcoming "A Late Quartet" and "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which premiered at TIFF last month. Her star is on the rise, as she's been seen rubbing elbows with Terrence Malick in "Knight Of Cups." And now she's landed her first bona fide blockbuster movie.
