Stephen Sondheim has never been an easy sell on screen. The Broadway composer's work is complex and rich in a way that doesn't easily lend itself to big-screen transitions, and outside of early work like "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," few of his shows have made it to the big screen -- "A Little Night Music" and Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" being the major exceptions. Given its fairy tale subject matter, "Into the Woods" always seemed like one of the more obvious contenders to make it to the movies, with Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes and Penny Marshall among the filmmakers who've flirted with the idea in the past.

Bradley Cooper
The saga continues... For a moment, it looked like everything was going to be okay on the troubled western "Jane Got A Gun." After Michael Fassbender's departure followed not longer after by director Lynne Ramsay's dramatic bailing on the movie literally days before cameras were going to roll (depending on who you ask she blindsided producers, or simply couldn't come to terms with them) the movie recovered with "Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor taking over the director's chair. The cast was shaken up a bit with the long attached Natalie Portman (who is also a producer on the movie) being joined by Joel Edgerton (who changed roles during the casting shuffle), Bradley Cooper (replacing Jude Law who also eventually exited) and Noah Emmerich. Now the movie has lost another major actor.

With "The Hangover Part III" arriving next month, and now a massive, R-rated comedy franchise, it's easy to forget that way back in 2009, this movie was not expected to be a hit. Oh sure, Warner Bros. knew it would do well (it didn't cost them very much either) but they couldn't have predicted how well it was going to do when arguably the biggest name in the cast was Heather Graham. Guys like Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis had not taken off yet, but over $460 million dollars worldwide later, their lives changed instantly. But what if the casting had gone a different way?

Dan Gilroy, like his older brother Tony, has spent years working in Hollywood as a screenwriter, contributing to major movies like “Real Steel” and “The Bourne Legacy.” Now it looks as if he will follow in his brother’s footsteps by making the move towards directing.

Jake Gyllenhaal takes the slow but steady approach to moviemaking, appearing in one movie per year, from 2009's "Brothers" to last year's "End Of Watch." But it seems French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has lit a fire under him. He's currently in front of cameras with the filmmaker on the long developing thriller "Prisoners," but last year, Gyllenhaal pulled double duty on "An Enemy" and now the first pic from movie is here.

Nailed, Jessica Biel, James Marsden
It seems the saga of David O. Russell's "Nailed" isn't quite ready to end just yet. Or at the very least, it's not fading quietly into the night. Where to begin? We'll try and keep it brief. The once promising movie started shooting in the spring of 2008 with Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan and James Marsden all in the cast, but things quickly went down hill. Plagued with dodgy financing, production started and stopped a handful of times as crew members waited to get paid, eventually shutting down completely with only one day of filming left to complete it.

It seems Hollywood is in the full blown grip of F. Scott Fitzgerald fever, or they're at least reading "The Great Gatsby" again. Of course, there is Baz Luhrmann's ambitious adaptation dropping next month, but if you're looking to catch up with the source material without having to actually read anything, Jake Gyllenhaal is here to help.

We were beginning to wonder, as 24 hours had nearly passed, but yet another update has arrived in the ongoing saga of the western "Jane Got A Gun." The film, which this week saw director Lynne Ramsay and star Jude Law quit the project, while "Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor has been hired to try to get this thing moving, is still without a villain. The project, now looking to fall a week behind schedule, is in search for a replacement, and a few names have cropped up as possible substitutes.

We always like it when actors we like join projects by directors we like, so this kind of news makes us happy. Over the summer, it was revealed that Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the filmmaking pair behind "Half Nelson" and "Sugar," had lined up their next project. "Mississippi Grind" will find them working with Jake Gyllenhaal, and now another actor who has been more than a familiar face over the past little while has joined as well.

So has Jake Gyllenhaal found his Martin Scorsese? Whatever is happening between him and French Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve ("Incendies") seems to be working as after spening the summer with him shooting "An Enemy," he's going to take a role in the director's next film, which is now picking up speed.
