So, the Academy Award nominated editor of Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous" and Terrence Malick's "The Thin Red Line" is making his directorial debut with "Things People Do." Pretty cool, but not much else, right? Well, peer a little close and you'll see a number of connections to Malick and more, making this a fascinating collection of talent for a movie with some pretty decent promise. We're still months and months away from the Oscars, but the other awards ceremony of the moving image is starting to sneak up; two weeks from today, the nominations for the Primetime Emmys, the biggest awards honoring television comedies, dramas, miniseries and movies, will be announced, ahead of the ceremony itself in September. Given the stars that the small screen attracts these days, it's just as glitzy as the Academy Awards, and given that we're living in what's generally deemed to be something of a golden age of television, there are more good shows on the air than could possibly be honored in a single ceremony. Someone's going to miss out.

It's been a long, strange trip for "A Single Shot." Seemingly stuck in development hell, the project had an array of names circling over the past couple of years -- Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Emily Mortimer, Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis, James Badge Dale, Juno Temple, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church -- but began finally firming things up this week. Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs and William H. Macy (who has been attached through various incarnations) were confirmed, and now we know the rest of the folks joining them.

There appears to be some kind of legal mandate that any actor who spends time on the East Coast has to, at some point, guest star on "Law & Order" or one of its many spin-offs. Over the 20-year history of the franchise, it's managed to find room for the diverse, acclaimed likes of Robin Williams, Angela Lansbury,  Marcia Gay Harden, Ellen Burstyn, Brenda Blethyn, Dianne Weist, Frank Langella,  Alfred Molina, Stephen Rea, Sharon Stone, Jeremy Irons, Laura Linney, Liza Minnelli, Holly Hunter and Julia Roberts. Hell, there are not many shows that have had guest appearances from both Ludacris AND Isabelle Huppert.
