For the last few years, Hollywood's holy grail has seemed to be the R-rated relationship comedy -- it seems that every other script on the annual Black List is an attempt at the genre, and the summer is stuffed with examples. But only this morning, with the trailer for "What's Your Number?," we've seen that things aren't as simple as taking the traditional romantic comedy template and liberally sprinkling the words "fuck" and "vagina" over it -- there's an alchemy to the blend of crudity and heart that few have mastered.

Winkler and Matt Spicer Also Sell 'The First Man' To Paramount Starring Johnny KnoxvilleFledgling filmmaking duo, director/writer Max Winkler and producer/writer Matt Spicer might not be household names at the moment, but if the frequency with which their names keep appearing in the film trades continues, the up-and-coming duo are going to be a familiar force to be reckoned with. The two have their debut feature film, "Ceremony" (which Winkler wrote and directed, Spicer produced) coming to theaters on April 8th starring Uma Thurman and Michael Angarano, and two big name writing projects- "The Ornate Anatomy of Living Things" and "The Adventurer's Handbook" -- sold to studios, both with serious buzz surrounding them.

Emily Blunt Confirmed As Female Lead Opposite Jason SegelAMC's "Mad Men" is pretty much the best drama series on television; "Breaking Bad" might give it a run for its money, but we reckon the period piece has the edge. While it's more divisive (including within the staff of The Playlist) NBC's "Community" is, for this writer, the best comedy on television -- with an ambition and, generally speaking, a level of execution (the show can be patchy occasionally) above even the excellent "Parks and Recreation" and "30 Rock." And there's one person that links the two: 27-year-old actress Alison Brie.

Steve Zaillian's Film Rites company is on a major roll (as is the Academy Award-winning writer himself). The production banner has "The Cold Light of Day," starring "Superman"-to-be Henry Cavill, and "Red Riding Hood" coming out later this year (the former with Summit, the latter with Warner Bros.), they inked a first-look, two-year producing deal with DreamWorks last spring and most recently they're working on the English-language adaptation of the Spanish sci-fi time-travel pic, "Time Crimes," at the studio as well.

Ok, so "I Love You, Man" wasn't quite the laff-out-loud comedy we were hoping for, but it provided some good gags and gave Paul Rudd yet another trademark line: "Slappa da bass!"

Disney’s new Muppet movie -- now called “The Muppet Movie” -- has had more actors attached to it than the Academy Awards. On the surface the plot is classic Hollywood but according to a recent interview with Jack Black, there’s an interesting kick to it. No, we're not talking about an “Inception” type kick, although we would like readers to pause for a moment and contemplate that story arc. Instead, Black will play someone very close and familiar.

Either it's a trend or a freak coincidence (or some mixture of both), but December has found A-list stars cashing paychecks and slumming it in sub-par material. Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and their silly putty faces floated through the turgid romantic thriller, " The Tourist," that was neither sexy nor exciting, and audiences smelled their half-hearted participation from a mile away. Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon and Jack Nicholson failed to convince anybody to see James L. Brooks' over-populated, people-talking-on-telephones comedy "How Do You Know." Opening this week is "Little Fockers," the terrible forthcoming installment in the Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller franchise that only seems to have gotten made because of contractual obligations and a senior production executive who tittered at the punny title. And now, we have "Guillver's Travels" arriving on Christmas weekend with a starry cast -- Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Billy Connolly -- and pays them for doing a bunch of reaction shots against a green screen.

"Our Goal Is 'Annie Hall' Or 'When Harry Met Sally'," Film Likely To Shoot In April We've said it before, but the state of the modern romantic comedy is a pretty lamentable one. Contrived, lazy, laugh-free films such as "Leap Year," "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and "Valentine's Day" have tainted to the genre to the extent that when the decent, but flawed, likes of "(500) Days Of Summer" come along, they're treated like the second coming of Preston Sturges.

Is Emily Blunt “about to be offered” a role opposite Jason Segel in his gestating romantic comedy “Five-Year Engagement” from director Nicholas Stoller? Possibly and all signs point to yes. Especially since Blunt was just added to the cast of Segel's "The Muppets" also co-written by Stoller. Evidently they're fans as they offered her the role of Jackie Q in “Get Him To The Greek,” but the British thespian had to pass due to obligations for Fox's "Gulliver’s Travels" (which Segel not-so-coincidentally co-starred in).
